Sta-Kon RG2-38 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RG2-38 ring terminal take?
The RG2-38 is built for 2 AWG conductor. It's a single-size barrel, so smaller wire won't crimp reliably in it and larger won't enter. If your conductor is anything other than 2 AWG, you need a different terminal, not a different crimp die.
2) Will this Sta-Kon ring terminal fit a 3/8 inch stud or bolt?
Yes. The RG2-38 ring tongue is sized for 3/8 inch bolt or stud hardware, and it's a two-bolt (two-hole) tongue, so it lands on a pair of 3/8 inch studs rather than a single post. That matters on busbar and large breaker lugs where a two-hole pattern is required to keep the lug from rotating.
3) What voltage is the Sta-Kon RG2-38 rated for, and is it UL listed?
Rated 600 V, and it carries UL file E9809. That covers the usual 120/208, 277/480 V commercial power work, so it's acceptable for panel, switchgear and motor terminations inside that range. Don't use it above 600 V.
4) Is the RG2-38 terminal copper or aluminum, and can I use it on aluminum conductor?
The barrel is copper, so it's intended for copper conductor. Aluminum wire needs an AL-rated or AL9CU dual-rated connector; crimping aluminum into a copper-only terminal risks a dissimilar-metal connection that loosens and heats over time.
5) Is a two-hole ring terminal like the RG2-38 right for my busbar, or should I use a single-hole lug?
Use a two-hole tongue when the landing pad has a two-bolt pattern or when the connection must resist twisting, which is common on ground bars, busbars, and larger panel terminations. A single-hole lug is the right choice on a single stud or breaker post. The RG2-38 is the two-bolt, 3/8 inch version for 2 AWG copper, so it only works where both 3/8 inch holes line up with your pad spacing.
6) Can I crimp a 2 AWG Sta-Kon ring terminal with hand pliers?
No. A 2 AWG copper barrel needs a heavy-duty crimper with the correct die for that size, typically a hydraulic or long-arm ratchet tool. Standard insulated-terminal pliers top out well below this gauge and will leave an under-compressed joint that heats under load. The RG2-38 does not include a tool.
7) What part number do I order for a 2 AWG two-hole 3/8 inch red Sta-Kon ring terminal?
Order Sta-Kon RG2-38. That's the manufacturer part number for the nylon insulated two-bolt ring terminal with a 3/8 inch hole pattern on 2 AWG copper, in red. Parts are made in Mexico.
8) Why is this Sta-Kon ring terminal red, and does the color mean anything?
The nylon insulation on the RG2-38 is red. On heavy-gauge Sta-Kon terminals the color is a quick field identifier for the wire size the barrel accepts, so a crew pulling parts can sort 2 AWG terminals from adjacent sizes on sight. It is not a voltage or polarity code, and it does not change the 600 V rating.
9) Does the nylon insulation on the RG2-38 mean I don't need heat shrink or tape over the crimp?
The RG2-38 is a nylon insulated ring terminal, so the barrel and the transition to the conductor are already sleeved and no extra tape or boot is needed for basic insulation at 600 V. Nylon is tougher and more abrasion resistant than vinyl, which is why it's specified in panels and junction boxes where terminals get pushed around during dress-in. Heat shrink is still worth adding in wet or high-vibration locations, but it is not required to make the terminal rated.
