Sta-Kon RJ717 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RJ717 ring terminal take?
The RJ717 is sized for 2/0 AWG conductor. It's a one-size barrel, so it won't grip smaller cable like 1/0 or 1 AWG reliably, and it won't accept 3/0. Match the terminal to the actual conductor size you're landing.
2) Is this ring terminal rated for 600 volt circuits?
Yes. The Sta-Kon RJ717 carries a 600 V rating and is UL recognized under file E9809, so it's usable in standard 480Y/277 and 600 V commercial power distribution as well as lower voltage control work.
3) Is the RJ717 copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum cable?
The barrel is copper, so it's intended for copper conductor. Terminating aluminum cable requires a terminal marked AL or AL9CU with the correct inhibitor compound; this one is not that part.
4) Why is this 2/0 ring terminal blue instead of the usual color code?
Blue is the insulation color Sta-Kon uses on this 2/0 AWG nylon insulated ring. Don't read it as the small-gauge blue (16-14 AWG) used on standard vinyl terminal color codes; on heavy power terminals the color identifies the series, and the printed size on the barrel is what you go by.
5) Do I need a special crimp tool for a 2/0 Sta-Kon ring terminal?
Yes. A 2/0 AWG copper barrel this size is beyond hand-plier range; it takes a heavy-duty crimper with the matching Sta-Kon die for the RJ series, hydraulic or ratchet type. Crimping it with a general-purpose terminal tool will give you an under-formed connection on a 600 V conductor.
6) Does the nylon insulation on this terminal hold up better than vinyl?
Nylon is the insulation here rather than vinyl. Nylon sleeves resist abrasion and cracking better and tolerate higher temperatures, which is why they're specified in panel and motor-connection work where the lug may get pulled through a raceway or flexed during dress-in.
7) Where is the Sta-Kon RJ717 made, for submittal paperwork?
Country of origin is Mexico. Pair that with the UL file reference E9809 and the 600 V rating when you're filling out a submittal or Buy American disclosure for an electrical package.
