1) What wire size does the Sta-Kon RK9731 ring terminal take?
The RK9731 is sized for 2/0 AWG conductor. It's a nylon insulated ring terminal with a copper barrel, so it crimps onto 2/0 copper cable. If your cable is a different gauge, pick the matching Sta-Kon part instead - crimping a 2/0 terminal onto smaller wire leaves a loose joint that will heat up.
2) Is the Sta-Kon RK9731 copper or aluminum, and can I put it on aluminum cable?
The barrel is copper, so the RK9731 is for copper conductor. Aluminum cable needs a terminal rated AL or AL9CU; a copper-only lug on aluminum sets up a dissimilar-metal joint that corrodes and loosens.
3) Is a nylon insulated ring terminal better than a fork terminal for panel work?
A ring terminal has to come off the stud to be removed, so it cannot vibrate loose or slide off under load - that's why ring tongues are specified for battery, motor and distribution connections. A fork or spade tongue slides out from under a loosened screw, which is faster for service work but not acceptable where vibration or a captive connection matters. 4) Does the RK9731 need a special crimping tool?
2/0 AWG is well past the range of a hand pliers-type crimper. A terminal this size needs a heavy-duty crimper - hydraulic or a long-handle mechanical tool - matched to the barrel. The nylon insulation stays in place during a proper crimp; it is not a heat-shrink sleeve and does not need a torch.
5) Why is this ring terminal yellow?
Yellow is the insulation color on the RK9731 and on heavy-gauge nylon insulated terminals generally, so an inspector or the next electrician can read the wire range off the color without pulling the connection apart. On this part it signals the 2/0 AWG barrel.
