Ives IVE-112XY-83-628 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to specify left hand or right hand for a 112XY geared hinge?
Not for a standard hinge. The 112XY is non-handed, so one part number covers both left and right hand openings and it works on beveled or square edge doors. Handing only comes into play if you add hospital tips, an electrical power transfer prep, or the throughwire panel with Allegion Connect, since those are placed on a specific side. Those options ask for RH or LH on the order.
2) Is the Ives 112XY approved for a 90 minute fire rated door?
Yes. The 112XY is UL10C rated for 90 minute fire door applications and is certified to ANSI 156.26 Grade 1, which is the heavy duty continuous hinge standard. That combination is what a hospital or school spec normally calls for on a rated corridor opening.
3) What mounting screws come with the Ives 112XY, and what do I need for a wood door?
Standard is 12-24 x 3/4 inch steel self drilling, self tapping Phillips screws (TEK), which are for hollow metal door and frame. If your opening is wood you order the WD wood screw pack, or TEKWD when it's a wood door in a hollow metal frame (half and half). Security screws with a hex pin drive are also available in three combinations: hollow metal both sides (SECHM), wood door with hollow metal frame (SECWDHM), and wood both sides (SECWDWD). Pick the fastener set that matches the door and frame material, or the screws will strip out.
4) Can I run wiring through an Ives 112XY hinge for an electric lock?
Yes, two ways. The EPT option preps the hinge for an electrical power transfer, which is what you use when you're feeding an electrified lock or exit device with a separate transfer device. The TWP CON option is an electric throughwire panel with Allegion Connect built in, so the conductors run through the hinge itself. Both are handed, so specify RH or LH when you order.
5) What is the difference between a full mortise geared continuous hinge and a full surface one?
Full mortise, which is what the 112XY is, mounts into a routed pocket on the side of the door stile and inside the frame jamb, so only the gear cover shows when the door is closed. That means you have to prep the door and frame with a router. Full surface hinges screw onto the face of the door and the frame with no routing, which is the retrofit choice when you cannot mill an existing door or the edge is already chewed up. Pick full mortise on new work or where appearance matters.
6) Will an Ives 112XY stop my metal door from sagging?
That is the main reason to use one. A geared continuous hinge carries the door along the full height of the jamb instead of concentrating the load at three or four butt points, so the top hinge is not taking the shear that pulls a door out of alignment. On a heavy or high traffic leaf that is the fix for a door that keeps dropping and dragging on the strike. The 112XY handles 450 pounds without frame reinforcing.
7) Why use a continuous hinge instead of butt hinges on a school or daycare door?
Pinch protection. Butt hinges leave open gaps between the leaves at the hinge edge where a child's fingers can go; a geared continuous hinge closes that gap along the whole height of the door. Combined with the 90 minute UL10C fire rating, that is why these show up on educational and healthcare corridor doors. The 112XY also adds the hospital tip (HT) option if the spec calls for it.
8) Is the Ives 112XY heavy duty enough for a high traffic entrance?
It is certified ANSI 156.26 Grade 1, the top heavy duty tier for continuous hinges, and it's a commercial rather than residential product. The gear design is a rounded profile with a patented center-loaded interlocking bearing, which is what keeps the action smooth after the cycles pile up on an entry or a stairwell door. For a 450 pound leaf you can hang it without reinforcing the frame; above that, up to 600 pounds, the frame needs reinforcing.
9) What finishes does the Ives 112XY geared hinge come in?
Three anodized aluminum finishes: 628 clear anodized, 710 dark bronze anodized, and 711 black anodized. All three are offered in the 83, 85 and 95 inch lengths, and in the 119 inch length as well, so you can match the hinge across every opening in a building regardless of door height.
