Kaba Simplex 7100 Series

Simplex Mechanical Pushbutton Locks eliminate problems and costs associated with issuing, controlling, and collecting keys and cards.

Kaba 7100 Series provides fully mechanical primary or auxiliary pushbutton access control by exterior combination, while allowing free egress at all times by interior thumbturn. Deadbolt models must be manually relocked. Deadlocking latch models automatically relock each time the door closes. This fully mechanical lock elimates the material and labor expense of battery replacements, has a single access-code and is programmed via the keypad without removing the lock from the door.

Finish Notes & Models

7106 model (function 6) - Black finish is black with black inside trim.
For all other black 7100 Series models, inside trim is satin chrome.

Dormakaba 7104-26D-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Dormakaba Simplex 7100 pushbutton lock fit a 1-3/8 inch wood door?
Yes. The Simplex 7100 Series covers doors from 1-3/8 inch up to 2-1/4 inch, wood or metal, so a 1-3/8 inch interior wood door and a 1-3/4 inch commercial door are both inside the range. The one restriction worth catching before you order: the 7106 rim latch model is a 2-3/8 inch backset, wood door only. If you're putting it on a hollow metal door, order a 7102, 7104 or 7108 instead.
2) Which backset do I order on a Simplex 7100 keyless lock, 2-3/8 or 2-3/4?
It depends on the function. The 7102 deadbolt is a fixed 2-3/4 inch backset. The 7104 ships with an adjustable latch that covers 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inch, so you don't have to measure exactly. The 7106 and 7108 are 2-3/8 inch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore on the door you're working on: 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 are the two standard backsets in North America, and if you're replacing an existing lock the hole is already cut to one of them.
3) Will a Simplex mechanical pushbutton lock work on a narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
No. The 7100 Series needs a minimum stile of 4 inches, and a typical narrow stile aluminum entrance is closer to 2 inches at the lock rail, so the body has nowhere to land. For a glass storefront opening you want a device built for narrow stile, not this lock. The 4 inch minimum does clear most medium and wide stile doors, and any standard wood or hollow metal door.
4) Does the Simplex 7100 need batteries or wiring?
Neither. The 7100 is fully mechanical, so there's no battery to change, no power to run, and no failure when the building loses power. The code is entered on solid metal pushbuttons and the lock is programmed through the keypad itself without pulling it off the door. It holds a single access code shared by all users, which is the tradeoff against an electronic lock: no audit trail and no per-user codes, but nothing to maintain either.
5) How do people get out from inside a door with a Simplex 7100 pushbutton lock?
By the interior thumbturn, which retracts the bolt or latch at any time without a code. Egress is free from the inside no matter what state the outside is in. The code is only ever needed on the exterior side. The thumbturn is clutch protected and force resistant, so twisting on it hard from outside the intended path does not drive the mechanism.
6) Which Simplex 7100 model should I use on a door that has to stay unlocked during the day?
The 7106. It's the only 7100 function with latch holdback, so you can hold the rim latch retracted for open hours and release it to secure the door at close, without anyone entering a code all day. Two constraints on it: it takes a 2-3/8 inch backset and it's for wood doors only. On a metal door you'd go to a 7104 or 7108 deadlocking latch and accept that every entry needs the code.
7) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Simplex 7100 lock?
No. The 7100 is field reversible, so one part number covers left and right hand doors and you can flip it on site. That matters if you're stocking these across a portfolio of buildings: you carry one lock instead of two, and a tech who shows up to the wrong hand door isn't making a second trip.
8) Which strike comes with each Simplex 7100 model, and will it match my existing frame prep?
The strike varies by function. The 7102 and 7108 come with a flat deadbolt strike plate. The 7104 comes with a curved lip strike. The 7106 rim latch ships with a box strike for in-swing doors and a flat strike for out-swing. So on a 7106 you need to know which way the door swings before you set the frame. On the others, if the existing frame is already cut for a deadbolt strike, the flat plate on the 7102 or 7108 is the closest match.
9) Can I use a Simplex 7100 as the only lock on an exterior door, or does it go alongside another lock?
Either. Dormakaba lists the 7100 for primary or auxiliary access control, so it can carry the opening on its own or sit above an existing knob or lever as the code-controlled layer. The auxiliary arrangement is the common one on a tenant or service door: staff use the code on the 7100 and the existing lockset stays for key holders. The housing is a cast metal front and the unit is weather resistant, so an exterior application is within what it is built for.
10) What finishes does the Simplex 7100 pushbutton lock come in, and do the insides match?
Eight: Bright Brass 605, Antique Brass 609, Satin Chrome 626, Black 19 (676), Gold Vein, Silver Vein, Antique Copper and Antique White. Two things to know if you're matching hardware across a building. On the 7106, black is black on the inside trim too; on every other 7100 model ordered in black, the interior trim is satin chrome, so the two sides will not match. And Antique White is a discontinued finish, available only while stock lasts, so don't spec it for a rollout you'll be adding to later.
11) Is a mechanical code lock like the Simplex 7100 right for a building where staff turn over often?
It's a fit where you want to stop chasing keys and cards but don't need per-person control. The 7100 carries one access code for everyone, changed at the keypad in minutes without taking the lock off the door, so a departure means recoding the door rather than rekeying it or collecting a fob. What it will not do is tell you who came through, or let you revoke one person without changing the code for everybody. If you need individual credentials or an audit trail, this is the wrong tool and you want an electronic access control lock.
12) Is the Simplex 7100 rated for commercial traffic or is it a residential lock?
Commercial. Dormakaba builds the 7100 with an all metal cast front housing and vandal resistant solid metal pushbuttons, which is the construction that survives a public-facing door rather than a front hall. Combined with the 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch thickness range it covers standard commercial wood and hollow metal doors.

The lock's durability is impressive too. However, I wish the price was a bit more budget-friendly. All in all, it's a solid choice if you want a dependable entry solution.
