Kawneer KW048964-40 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Kawneer KW048964-40 faceplate fit?
The KW048964-40 is a Kawneer service part made as a replacement deadlatch faceplate for the Adams Rite 8400 exit device. It is a radius profile plate with weatherstrip built in, so it drops onto door and frame prep already cut for that device without rework.
2) Is this a radius or a flat (square) deadlatch faceplate?
Radius. The KW048964-40 has a curved faceplate profile meant to match a radiused latch prep in the door edge. If your existing plate is square-cornered flat stock, this is the wrong shape for that prep and you want a flat faceplate instead.
3) Is the KW048964-40 the whole latch or just the cover plate?
Just the faceplate. It is the plate that mounts at the door edge over the deadlatch, with the weatherstrip attached. The latch mechanism, exit device and trim are separate parts, so this only solves a damaged, missing or mismatched faceplate, not a latch that has failed internally.
4) Does the Kawneer KW048964-40 come with the weatherstrip, or do I order that separately?
The weatherstrip is part of the plate. One order gets you the faceplate and the seal at the latch point, which is the usual reason this part gets swapped on exterior storefront doors where the seal at the strike side has worn out.
5) What finish is the KW048964-40 faceplate, and will it match my other door hardware?
Dark Bronze, applied at the factory. It is a common commercial storefront finish, so it reads correctly alongside dark bronze anodized aluminum entrances and bronze pulls. If your openings are clear anodized or aluminum, this plate will stand out.
6) Is this part suitable for a commercial building, or is it residential grade?
Commercial. Kawneer builds the KW048964-40 for commercial entrance systems, which is where the Adams Rite 8400 is used, so it fits school, healthcare, office, retail and municipal exit door maintenance programs where the plate has to hold up to constant traffic.
7) What part number do I give my supplier for a Kawneer radius deadlatch faceplate in dark bronze?
KW048964-40 is the Kawneer model designation. Quote it by brand and number, along with the Adams Rite 8400 device it services, so the radius version in dark bronze is what ships rather than a flat plate or a different finish.
