Kawneer KW050746 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Kawneer KW050746 concealed overhead closer have a hold-open feature?
No. The KW050746 is built in a no hold-open configuration, so the door closes and returns every time rather than staying propped. If the opening needs the door to stand open, this is the wrong version of the part, and you need a hold-open closer instead.
2) Is the KW050746 a genuine Kawneer part or an aftermarket closer?
It is a genuine Kawneer service part, sold under Kawneer model number KW050746. That matters on Kawneer aluminum door systems, where the closer has to sit inside factory-machined pockets in the top rail and frame head. An aftermarket closer of similar size usually will not land on the same prep.
3) Will the KW050746 drop straight into my existing Kawneer door without new prep?
On compatible Kawneer assemblies, yes, it is intended as a direct replacement so the existing concealed pocket and mounting are reused. Match the door to the same closer model that came out of it; Kawneer builds several concealed closers and the hold-open versions are a different part than this one.
4) What application is the Kawneer KW050746 closer made for?
Interior door light assemblies in Kawneer commercial door systems. It is an international concealed overhead closer, meaning the body is hidden in the header rather than surface mounted on the door face, which is why it is specified where a clean interior appearance is wanted.
5) I manage a building with several Kawneer interior doors. Is the KW050746 the same closer across all of them?
Not necessarily. The KW050746 covers interior door light openings with no hold-open. Doors that are set up to stay open, or exterior Kawneer entrances, take different closers. Pull the old unit and confirm the Kawneer number stamped on it before you standardize a fleet order on this one.
6) Can I use the KW050746 concealed closer on a residential entry door?
It is a commercial-rated part intended for commercial door assemblies, not residential entry doors. Typical placements are office buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, retail, government buildings and multi-tenant properties.
