Kawneer KW050750 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the Kawneer KW050750 concealed overhead closer used for?
The KW050750 is Kawneer's International concealed overhead closer for 30 inch door applications, supplied as a genuine Kawneer service replacement part. The closer body mounts overhead and out of sight, so the door gets controlled closing without any exposed hardware on the leaf or frame. It is a light duty unit intended for commercial openings that see lower traffic.
2) Does the Kawneer KW050750 closer hold the door open?
No. The KW050750 is the no hold open configuration, so the door returns to closed after every use. If you need a door that parks open at a set angle, this is the wrong version to order. For egress doors and openings where the door has to self close for security, no hold open is what you want.
3) Will the KW050750 work on a door wider than 30 inches?
It is specified for 30 inch door applications. Wider leaves carry more mass and need a closer sized for that width, so going beyond 30 inches with this light duty unit is outside what it is specified for. Measure the actual leaf width before ordering a replacement.
4) Can I use the KW050750 as a direct replacement in an existing Kawneer door?
Yes, where the KW050750 is the model specified for that system. It is an OEM Kawneer service part, so it drops into Kawneer door systems built around this closer. Pull the existing unit or check the door schedule for the model callout before you order, since concealed closers are cut into the frame or rail pocket and a different model will not match the prep.
5) Is the KW050750 a light duty or heavy duty closer, and does that matter for a high traffic entrance?
Light duty. It is rated for lower frequency commercial door use, not the constant cycling you get at a main building entrance or a busy school corridor. For a high traffic opening, specify a heavy duty concealed closer instead. Offices, retail back of house, and tenant doors are the kind of service this one is built for.
6) Is a concealed overhead closer the right choice, or should I use a surface mounted closer?
A concealed overhead closer like the KW050750 hides the mechanism in the head or door rail, which keeps the storefront or entrance looking clean with no hardware on the face of the door. That only works if the frame and door are prepped for it. On an existing opening with no concealed pocket, a surface mounted closer is the practical choice because it mounts to the face of the door and frame with no machining.
7) Is the Kawneer KW050750 suitable for residential use?
It is classified as a commercial part. Typical placements are office buildings, schools, healthcare, retail, government buildings, multi-tenant residential properties, and industrial or warehouse facilities. A single family home would not normally have the concealed Kawneer door system this closer serves.
