Klein Tools 56203 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conduit sizes does the Klein Tools assembled iron conduit bender cover?
Three sizes of EMT: 1/2-inch (part 56203), 3/4-inch (56204), and 1-inch (56205). Each bender head is sized for one conduit diameter, so an electrician running mixed sizes needs a separate bender for each. The 1/2-inch is the one most used for branch circuit work.
2) Will this Klein bender work on rigid conduit or IMC, or only EMT?
EMT only. The head geometry on the 56203, 56204 and 56205 is cut for electrical metallic tubing, and rigid or IMC of the same trade size has a larger outside diameter, so it will not seat correctly in the shoe. For rigid or IMC you need a bender head marked for that pipe.
3) Does it come assembled with a handle, or do I have to buy the handle separately?
It ships assembled, head and handle together, so there is nothing to buy or fit before the first bend. The handle is high-strength steel with an orange finish to make it easy to find on a job site.
4) Can I lay out stubs and offsets without doing the math on paper?
The head has cast-in symbols, degree scales, multiplier scales and center-of-bend marks, plus a clearly visible arrow to line up on your conduit mark. That covers the layout for stub ups, offsets, back-to-back and saddle bends directly off the head, which is the traditional Benfield head function.
5) How do I fix an overbend with this bender?
The steel handle has a swaged end. Slip that end into the conduit and use it as a lever to open the bend back up to the angle you want, so a few degrees of overbend does not mean cutting a new piece.
6) Will this bender ripple or flatten the tubing on tight bends?
The head design is specifically made to reduce rippling and ovaling, and the interior hook surface plus angled grooves keep the conduit from rolling or twisting while you pull the bend. Those two things together are what keeps the tube round through the radius.
7) Can I cut conduit with the bender itself?
There is an interior clamp in the head that holds a length of conduit while you cut it with a hacksaw. It is not a cutter, just a clamp, so you still bring your own hacksaw.
8) Is this Klein conduit bender made in the USA for spec and procurement purposes?
Country of origin is the United States, which is what a government or institutional buyer needs on record for domestic-preference purchasing.
9) Is the foot pedal big enough to stand on comfortably when pulling a bend?
Wide foot pedal, which is what gives the stability and leverage to step into the bend without the bender kicking out. Klein also notes you should work from a stable position and wear approved eye protection when bending.
