Milbank USS4701-O – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between the 4-jaw, 5-jaw and 7-jaw Milbank USS4 meter sockets?
The jaw count has to match the meter your utility sets. The Milbank USS4 ringless socket comes three ways: USS4801-O with 4 terminals for single phase 3-wire self-contained metering, USS4801-O-5T9 which adds a 5th terminal in the 9 o'clock position (used by utilities that meter network or 120/208V single phase from a 3-phase wye), and USS4701-O with 7 terminals for 3-phase 4-wire service. Call your utility before ordering, since they specify the jaw configuration and will reject a socket that does not match.
2) Can I use this Milbank meter socket outdoors on a wall?
Yes. It is a Type 3R enclosure, so it sheds rain, sleet and ice, and it is built for surface mounting on an exterior wall. The unpainted 304 stainless steel shell is the reason people spec this one over painted steel: coastal air, agricultural ammonia, car wash and wastewater sites eat galvanized enclosures. It is UL Listed.
3) Does this Milbank socket have a main breaker or disconnect in it?
No. The USS4 is a meter socket only, with no main breaker and no receptacle. You feed a separate service disconnect or panel downstream from it. If your jurisdiction requires a service disconnect at the meter, you need a meter-main combination instead of this socket.
4) What size service conductors will fit the lugs on this 200A Milbank socket?
Both line and load terminals take 6 AWG through 350 kcmil, and they are lay-in type, so you drop the conductor in rather than threading it through a hole. That range covers the usual 200A service runs, including 4/0 aluminum SER and 250 or 350 kcmil aluminum for longer underground laterals.
5) What does lever bypass do on a meter socket, and do I need it?
The lever bypass lets you shunt the meter jaws so the meter can be pulled and changed without dropping power to the building. Many utilities require bypass on 200A sockets serving occupied buildings, and property managers want it so a meter swap does not mean an outage for tenants. If your utility does not require bypass, a horn bypass or non-bypass socket is the cheaper spec.
6) Does this socket come with a hub for the service raceway?
No. It is supplied plain top, meaning the top is closed with no factory hub opening. For overhead service you add the correct Milbank hub or closing plate sized to your conduit, or you route in from the bottom or back for an underground lateral. Confirm which entry the utility will accept on that meter location.
7) Is this Milbank socket rated for 120/240V and 277/480V service?
The socket is rated to 600 volts AC at 60 hertz, which covers 120/240V residential, 120/208V and 277/480V commercial services. Voltage rating is the enclosure and insulation limit; the jaw configuration you pick still has to match the service type, and the socket is a single meter position rated 200 continuous amps.
8) Ringless or ring-type meter socket, which one does my utility want?
That is the utility's call, not the installer's. A ringless socket uses a one-piece cover that slides down over the meter and is sealed at the cover, which is what most utilities in the US now standardize on; a ring-type uses a sealing ring around the meter rim with a smaller cover. The Milbank USS4 is ringless, so if your utility spec sheet calls for ring-type you need a different enclosure.
9) Can I use this for a single unit in an apartment building, or do I need a gang socket?
This is a single-position socket, one meter per enclosure. For a multi-family building where several tenants are metered at one point, you want a multi-gang meter stack or a modular metering assembly rather than hanging individual USS4 sockets. Single sockets make sense for a house, a standalone commercial space, or a house-panel service in a small property.
10) What insulation is behind the jaws, and does it hold up in heat?
The jaw block is glass polyester, a thermoset that keeps its dielectric and mechanical properties at the temperatures a loaded 200A socket sees. Paired with the stainless enclosure it is the combination spec'd for outdoor service points where a phenolic or filled thermoplastic block would be the first thing to degrade.
