1) What does the position count mean on the Milbank U430 series LILCO meter socket, and which one do I order?
Position refers to how many meter positions the socket gang holds. The Milbank U430 ringless lever bypass sockets come in 2 position (U4302-X-LIS), 3 position (U4303-X-LIS), 4 position (U4304-X-LIS) and 6 position (U4306-X-LIS). Count the number of separately metered tenants or units feeding off the service and match that number. Each position is a 200 amp, 1 phase, 5 terminal socket.
2) Is this Milbank meter socket accepted by the Long Island utility?
Yes. The U430 series ringless lever bypass socket is built to Long Island Lighting Company specification, which is what the -LIS suffix on the part numbers indicates. If you are working in that service territory, this is the approved configuration: 5 terminal, ringless, lever bypass, large closing plate. Outside Long Island, your serving utility will have its own approved list and a non-LIS socket may be what they want.
3) Does this Milbank socket include main breakers for each unit?
No. The U430 series is supplied with no main breaker, so it is a socket only. You will need separate service disconnects downstream of each meter position, sized and located per the NEC and your utility's requirements. If you need a socket with integral mains, this is not the right part.
4) Can I use this meter socket for an underground service lateral, or is it overhead only?
Either. The U430 socket accepts overhead or underground cable entry, and it ships with a large closing plate over the hub opening so you can fit the hub or fitting your service requires. Enclosure is Type 3R, so it is rated for outdoor wall mounting exposed to rain, sleet and ice.
5) Will a ringless meter socket work if my utility uses ring-type meter covers?
No. A ringless socket like the Milbank U430 uses a cover that retains the meter directly, with no locking ring, and the two are not interchangeable. Utilities specify one or the other. This one is the ringless, 5 terminal configuration built to the Long Island Lighting Company spec. If your utility calls for ring-type, order a ring-type socket instead.
6) What is lever bypass and why would I want it on a multi-unit meter socket?
Lever bypass lets the utility or an electrician shunt current around the meter socket jaws with a lever before pulling the meter, so the meter comes out and goes back in without dropping power to the tenant. On a multi-family building where you cannot take a unit dark for a meter change, that matters. The Milbank U430 series carries lever bypass on every position. The alternative, a no-bypass socket, requires killing the service to change the meter.

That is the standard outdoor service-entrance build for wall mounting. It is a surface mount unit, so it lands flat on the wall or on a rack, not flush in it.
10) Does this meter socket come with any receptacles or house-power outlet?
No receptacles are provided on the Milbank U430 series, the count is zero. If the building needs a house outlet or house panel at the service point, that gets provided separately. There is also no main breaker in the unit.
