A bussed gutter is the line-to-load distribution box that sits between the service conductors and the meter sockets, splitting one incoming service into feeds for each meter position. The Milbank BC series covers 2 through 6 meter positions in single phase and three phase, so on a multi-tenant building you land the service once and tap each tenant position off the bus instead of splicing in a pull box. If your service is a single feed to a single meter, you don't need a bussed gutter at all.
2) Can the Milbank BC bussed gutter be mounted outside, exposed to weather?
Yes, it's a Type 3R enclosure, which is the outdoor rating for rain, sleet and ice, so it can go on an exterior wall alongside the meter stack. The shell is G90 galvanized steel with an ANSI 61 gray powder coat, which is what keeps it from rusting out in that location. Type 3R is not rated for washdown or dust-tight interiors, so a car wash bay or a dusty mill floor wants a Type 4 or 12 enclosure instead.
3) What size conductors will land in the lugs on a Milbank bussed gutter?
Line side lugs take 4 AWG up to 600 kcmil; load side lugs take 6 AWG up to 250 kcmil. Both accept copper or aluminum, so you can run aluminum service entrance conductors in and copper out, or the other way, without adapters. Note the load side tops out at 250 kcmil, so if a tenant feeder is larger than that this box will not terminate it.
4) What is the short circuit rating on the Milbank BC bussed gutter, and is it enough for my service?
42,000 amperes. That's the available fault current the bus can withstand, and it has to equal or exceed the fault current the utility can deliver at that point in the system. On most commercial and multi-family services the utility transformer will not push past 42 kA at the gutter, but if your utility's available fault current letter says higher, this box is not rated for that location.
5) Will the Milbank bussed gutter work on a 480V three-phase system?
Yes. It's rated up to 600 volts AC, which covers 120/240V single phase, 120/208V wye and 277/480V three phase. Order a three-phase variant for a 480V job, for example BC338 for three meter positions or BC438 for four.
6) How do I pick the right Milbank BC part number for my meter stack?
Two choices decide it: how many meter positions the gutter feeds, and whether the service is single phase or three phase.
