Milbank U3413-O – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size conductors will a Milbank bussed gutter take on the line side?
The Milbank line-to-load bussed gutter accepts 4 AWG through 600 kcmil on the line side lugs, and the load side is tapped holes rather than lugs. That range covers both copper and aluminum conductors, so you can run AL service entrance cable into it without a separate transition. Because the load side is tapped, you supply the load-side lugs or terminations to match whatever you are feeding out of it.
2) Can a Milbank bussed gutter be mounted outdoors on the side of a building?
Yes. It is a UL Listed Type 3R enclosure, which is the rain, sleet and ice-resistant rating used for outdoor service equipment, so it mounts on an exterior wall. The shell is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish in ANSI 61 grey, the standard gray used across utility and service gear.
3) How do I pick the right bussed gutter for a 4-unit apartment building meter stack?
Match the gutter to the number of meter positions it has to feed and the phase of the service. Milbank builds these in 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 meter positions, in both single phase and three phase. A four-unit building on single phase takes the 4-position single phase version, U3414-O. The same 4-position gutter in three phase is U3464-O. Going one size up in positions is common practice if you expect to add a unit later, since the bussing is factory set and cannot be extended in the field.
4) Is the Milbank bussed gutter rated for 480V three phase?
It is rated up to 600 volts AC, so a 480Y/277V or 480V three phase system is within rating. Order one of the three phase versions for that service: U3462-O, U3463-O, U3464-O, U3465-O or U3466-O for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 meter positions respectively. The single phase part numbers are not bussed for a three phase service.
5) Does the Milbank bus gutter come with knockouts for conduit?
No knockouts. The enclosure ships blank, so every conduit entry is a field-cut hole you punch or drill where the run actually lands. Plan on a hole saw or a knockout punch set plus weatherproof hub fittings on top and any other exposed face, since the Type 3R rating only holds if the penetrations are made up raintight.
6) What is the difference between a bussed gutter and a plain wireway or trough?
A plain wireway is an empty raceway, you splice or tap inside it yourself. A bussed gutter has factory-installed bus bar in it, so the incoming service lands once on the line side lugs and each meter position taps off the bus. That is what makes it the piece between a single service drop and a stack of meter sockets in a multi-unit building. If all you need is a pull and splice box with no distribution, a wireway is the cheaper and simpler answer. If you are splitting one service to multiple metered units, the bussed gutter is the part that does it.
7) How much wall space do I need for a Milbank bussed gutter?
The gutter measures 26.75 by 6.5 inches in the two dimensions Milbank publishes for it, so it is a tall, shallow box. The practical constraint on a service wall is usually the 6.5 inch dimension against the meter stack, since the gutter has to sit alongside or above the sockets with enough room to land 600 kcmil conductors and make the bends.
8) Is aluminum service entrance cable OK in a Milbank bus gutter, or does it have to be copper?
Either. The gutter is rated for copper and aluminum conductors, so AL service entrance cable is a listed use, not a workaround. Stay inside the 4 AWG to 600 kcmil range on the line side lugs, and treat the aluminum terminations the way you would anywhere else, clean the conductor, use the correct compound if the spec calls for it, and torque to the lug marking.
9) Will a 2-position bussed gutter work if I am only feeding one meter now but adding more later?
The bussing is fixed per part number, so a 2-position gutter stays a 2-position gutter. Milbank goes up to 6 meter positions, U3416-O in single phase and U3466-O in three phase, and buying the position count you expect to end at is cheaper than swapping the enclosure and re-terminating the service later. You do not have to land a conductor on every tap on day one.
10) How do you get into a Milbank bussed gutter to make connections?
The front is a lift-off screw cover, not a hinged door. You back out the screws and the whole panel comes away, which gives you the full opening to land lugs and torque connections, but it also means you need clear space in front and somewhere to set the cover down. Once it is back on, the enclosure holds its Type 3R rating.
