1) What is the difference between the Milbank U4548-RXL and U4549-RXL termination cabinets?
Phase. The U4548-RXL is the single-phase version and the U4549-RXL is the three-phase version. Everything else is common between them: 400A, up to 600V AC, 10kA short circuit rating, and the same painted G90 galvanized steel Type 3R enclosure. Order by phase of the service you are terminating.
2) Can this Milbank 400A termination cabinet be mounted outdoors?
Yes. The cabinet is UL Listed and Type 3R rated, which is the rating for outdoor enclosures protecting against rain, sleet, and ice. Construction is G90 galvanized steel with a powder coat finish in ANSI 61 Grey, so it is built for exterior wall mounting on a service or distribution run.
3) What size conductors will the lugs in this Milbank termination cabinet accept?
The lugs take 4 AWG through 600 kcmil, with a second range listed at 6 AWG to 350 kcmil, and there are lugs on both the line and load sides. They are rated for copper or aluminum conductors, so you can pull whichever the job calls for without swapping hardware. If your feeder is larger than 600 kcmil or you are running parallel sets, this cabinet will not take them.
4) Is a 10kA short circuit rating enough for my service?
The U4548/U4549 RXL carries a 10,000 ampere short circuit current rating. That works where the available fault current at the cabinet is 10kA or less. On a large commercial service close to the utility transformer, the available fault current often exceeds that, so run your fault current calculation at the point of installation before committing. If it comes in above 10kA, you need a higher SCCR enclosure.
5) Is this Milbank cabinet a meter socket or just a termination enclosure?
It is a termination cabinet, not a metering device. The application is line to load distribution: utility or feeder conductors land on the line lugs and your load conductors land on the load lugs. It is listed with one meter position in the family data, but the function here is termination and splicing, not revenue metering. If you need a socket with a meter jaw assembly, this is the wrong part.
6) Will the Milbank U4549-RXL work on a 480V three phase four wire service?
Yes on voltage. The cabinet is rated up to 600 volts AC, which covers 480Y/277V and 480V delta. The U4549-RXL is the three phase model and the cabinet is set up for five conductors, enough for three phases plus neutral and ground on a four wire wye service.
