Milbank K5752 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a Milbank CT mounting rack actually for, and do I need one for a 400A or 800A metered service?
It's the structural rack that holds current transformers inside a CT cabinet on a metered electrical service. The Milbank CTRK racks cover 400A and 800A applications, 1-phase and 3-phase, and are rated 600 volts AC at 60 hertz. The rack itself doesn't meter anything and doesn't include the CTs. It gives the donut CTs a fixed position and gives the line and load conductors a terminated landing point, so the utility can install and remove transformers without disturbing the service conductors.
2) Are the Milbank CTRK racks EUSERC approved?
No. These are the non-EUSERC versions of the Milbank CT rack. If your utility is a EUSERC member (most of the western states run EUSERC drawings), the inspector and the serving utility will reject a non-EUSERC rack, and you need the EUSERC-approved equivalent instead. Confirm which drawing set your serving utility works from before you order, because the two are not interchangeable in the field.
3) What conductor sizes will the Milbank CT rack terminate?
Two lug arrangements are offered. The K5747 (3-phase) and K5752 (1-phase) take 4 AWG to 600 kcmil, or two conductors of 1 AWG to 250 kcmil per phase on the load side, with a .375 stud line connection. The K5930 (3-phase) and K5931 (1-phase) step up to triple 4-600 kcmil, or six 1-250 kcmil per phase, which is what you want on a parallel-conductor 800A run. Size the rack to the conductor count you are actually pulling, not just the service amperage.
4) Which Milbank CT rack do I order for a 3-phase service versus a single-phase service?
Phase configuration is a separate part number, not a field setting. For 3-phase: K5747, K5930, or K5933. For single-phase: K5752 or K5931. A 1-phase rack has fewer CT positions and phase bars, so it cannot be converted to 3-phase on the job. Match the rack to the service before it ships.
5) What is the difference between the stud-type and the 1/2-13 stud Milbank CT rack, K5933?
K5933 is the 3-phase rack built with .5-13 studs on 1.75 inch centers rather than mechanical lugs. That's a bolted connection: you land compression or bolt-on terminals over the studs instead of landing bare conductor in a set screw lug. Pick it when the service conductors are already terminated in two-hole or single-hole compression lugs, or when the utility spec calls for a bolted landing. The lug-type racks (K5747, K5752, K5930, K5931) are the choice when you're landing bare cable direct.
6) Do the current transformers come with the Milbank CT rack?
No. The CTRK rack is a current transformer accessory, so it's the mounting hardware and terminations only. You supply the CTs, and on most metered services the serving utility supplies and owns them, sets the ratio, and installs them at their inspection. Order the rack sized to the utility's CT window and the conductor count, and leave the transformers to them unless your utility says otherwise.
7) Will a Milbank CT rack hold up in an outdoor service enclosure near the coast?
Construction is plated aluminum with non-metallic insulation between the phase assemblies and the rack frame. The plating on aluminum is what gives it corrosion resistance in a NEMA 3R CT cabinet, which is where most of these live. The rack does not provide its own weather protection, so the enclosure it goes into still has to carry the environmental rating for the location.
8) How does the Milbank CT rack mount into the cabinet?
Surface mount. The rack fastens to the back panel of the CT cabinet or enclosure rather than hanging off rails or a DIN channel. Plan your enclosure depth around conductor bending space for the lug arrangement you chose, since a triple 4-600 kcmil rack (K5930 or K5931) needs considerably more room behind the terminations than the single 4-600 kcmil versions.
