1) Will the Milbank U5137 meter socket work for an underground service lateral?
Underground is the only cable entry the U5137 is built for. It is a direct bury double pedestal socket, so the enclosure legs go into the ground and the service conductors come up from below into the line terminals. If your service drops overhead, this is the wrong socket and you want an overhead-entry meter socket instead. Line side lugs take 6 AWG through 350 kcmil, which covers the usual copper and aluminum underground laterals for a 200 amp service.
2) What does the double power head on the Milbank U5137 mean, can it feed two separate units?
Two metered positions in one pedestal. The U5137 is a double power head socket, 4 terminal jaws, single phase, up to 240 volts AC, so it meters two separate 120/240 volt single phase services off one underground lateral. That is what makes it a fit for a duplex, a pair of cabins, or two lots on a shared trench. Each position gets its own main breaker, and the breaker pairs you can order are dual 100A, dual 150A, dual 200A, or one 100A with one 200A when the two units are not the same size.
3) Which Milbank U5137 version do I order, and does my utility have to approve it?
Order by the breaker pair and by the utility. Generic horn bypass builds are U5137-O-100S for dual 100 amp mains and U5137-O-200S for dual 200 amp. Alliant Energy territory takes U5137-O-100S-ALT or U5137-O-200S-ALT. Florida Meter Group specs are U5137-O-100S-FMG, U5137-O-150S-FMG and U5137-O-200S-FMG. Claiborne Electric Cooperative takes U5137-O-200S-10GR-CEC. If you only need the breaker provision and will supply breakers separately, that is U5137-O-FMG. 4) What is horn bypass on a meter socket and do I need it?
Horn bypass lets the utility keep the service energized while the meter is pulled, using bypass horns inside the socket instead of interrupting power to the building. Most utilities that serve commercial or multi-family loads require it so meter changes and testing do not drop the tenant. Not every U5137 build carries it. The horn bypass versions are U5137-O-100S, U5137-O-100S-ALT, U5137-O-100S/200S, U5137-O-200S and U5137-O-200S-ALT.
