1) What is the difference between the Milbank U9318-RL and U9318-XL meter socket?
Both are the same 200A 5-terminal ringless socket with lever bypass; the difference is the top configuration. The U9318-RL comes with a small hub opening and the 5th terminal at the 6 o'clock position. The U9318-XL comes with a small closing plate for overhead service. Pick the RL if you need a hub opening for the service raceway and a 6 o'clock 5th terminal position, the XL if you are bringing overhead cable in and want the top closed off.
2) Will the Milbank U9318 meter socket take 4/0 aluminum service entrance cable?
Yes. Line and load lugs on the U9318 both accept 6 AWG through 350 kcmil, so 4/0 falls comfortably inside the range on either side. The terminals are lay-in type, which means the conductor drops into the lug rather than being threaded through.
3) Can this Milbank socket be used for underground service?
No. The U9318 is built for overhead cable entry, so it is the wrong choice for an underground lateral. For a pad or underground feed you want a socket specified with underground (lugs-on-bottom) entry instead.
