1) Will the Milbank UQFB bolt-on breaker work in a 120/240V single phase residential service?
Yes. The UQFB is a two-pole breaker rated 240 volts AC, 1 phase, 60 Hertz, so it lands across both hot legs of a standard single phase service. The two poles are common trip, so a fault on either leg opens both. It is a metering accessory breaker, meaning it goes into Milbank metering equipment rather than a general lighting panel.
2) What amp ratings does the Milbank UQFB F-Frame breaker come in?
Five ratings on the 200 amp F-Frame: 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 amps. Not every rating exists in every build. The 175 amp is 10K AIC only, and the 22K AIC (UQFBH) versions run 100, 125, 150 and 200. Size the breaker to the service conductors and the meter socket rating, not to the frame.
3) What is the threaded load-side tang option on the Milbank UQFB, and do I need it?
The threaded tang is a load-side terminal that takes a bolted lug or bus connection instead of the standard tang. Order the M suffix versions (UQFB-M-200, UQFBH-M-200) when the equipment or the conductor termination requires that bolted stud. If your Milbank enclosure is set up for the standard connection, the plain UQFB-200 is the one. The tang option is offered at 100, 125, 150 and 200 amps in 10K AIC, and at 100 and 200 amps in 22K AIC.
4) Will the Milbank UQFB breaker fit in my existing meter main enclosure?
The breaker measures 7.438 inches by 3.281 inches by 3 inches, and it mounts bolt-on with lug to lug connections. That is the F-Frame footprint Milbank metering equipment is built around, so it drops into a Milbank enclosure prepped for a 200 amp F-Frame bolt-on. It is not a plug-on load center breaker and will not clip onto a residential panel bus.
5) I am replacing a failed 200 amp breaker in a Milbank meter pack. How do I identify the right replacement?
Read the label on the breaker you are pulling and match three things: the amp rating (100, 125, 150, 175 or 200), the interrupting rating, and whether it has a threaded load-side tang. A plain UQFB-200 is 200 amp at 10,000 AIC with a standard tang. UQFBH-200 is the same breaker at 22,000 AIC. Add the M (UQFB-M-200, UQFBH-M-200) if the existing unit has the threaded stud on the load side. Never drop in a lower AIC than what came out.
6) How does a thermal magnetic breaker like the Milbank UQFB respond to a motor inrush versus a short circuit?
Two trip mechanisms in one breaker. The thermal element uses a bimetal that heats with sustained overload, so it rides through the brief inrush of a motor or compressor start and trips only if the overcurrent persists. The magnetic element responds instantly to the high current of a short circuit or ground fault. That combination is why thermal magnetic is the standard choice on a service disconnect feeding mixed motor and resistive load.
7) Does the Milbank UQFB breaker have auxiliary contacts for a shunt trip or alarm signal?
No auxiliary contacts. The UQFB is a straight mechanical breaker with a lever actuator for manual on/off and trip indication, with no contact block for remote status, shunt trip, or an alarm circuit. If the job needs remote indication or remote tripping, this is not the breaker for it.
8) Can the Milbank UQFB breaker be installed outdoors in a hot climate without derating?
The rating is based on a 40 degree Celsius (104 F) ambient. In a sun-exposed outdoor enclosure the internal air can run well above that, and a thermal magnetic breaker will nuisance trip below its nameplate amps when it does. On hot southern exposures, either shade the enclosure, allow ventilation, or size the service so the breaker is not run near its rating. The housing itself is non-metallic, which helps with corrosion in coastal and wet locations.
9) Can I use the Milbank UQFB two-pole breaker on a three phase 208V service?
No. The UQFB is a two-pole, single phase device rated 240 volts AC. A three phase service disconnect needs a three-pole breaker sized for that system. Use this one only on single phase 240V metering equipment.
