Rigid conduit. The CIG-1 is catalogued for rigid conduit connections, where the gasket compresses between the hub or locknut and the enclosure wall to seal the opening. EMT set-screw and compression connectors use their own sealing arrangement and are not what this gasket is sized for.
3) What is the Thomas & Betts CIG-1 gasket made of, and does neoprene hold up outdoors?
Neoprene. It is the standard sealing material for conduit hub gaskets because it takes compression under a locknut or hub and resists weather, ozone and oils, which is why it turns up on wet-location and outdoor enclosure work.
4) Do I need a gasket like the CIG-1 on every conduit entry into an enclosure?
Only where the entry has to stay sealed. On a dry indoor panel a plain locknut and bushing is usually all that is used; on a raintight or washdown enclosure the neoprene gasket goes under the hub or between locknut and box wall so water cannot track in at the opening.
