Thomas & Betts GKN-4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which trade sizes does the Thomas & Betts GKN neoprene conduit body gasket come in?
Three sizes cover the common conduit body range: GKN-4 for 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch trade size, GKN-6 for 2-1/2 to 3 inch, and GKN-7 for 3-1/2 to 4 inch. Each gasket spans two trade sizes, so match the gasket to the conduit body's trade size, not to the cover screw spacing.
2) Will a GKN gasket fit my Series A or Series B conduit body?
Yes. The GKN neoprene gaskets are made for Thomas & Betts Series A and Series B conduit bodies (LB, LL, LR, T, C style bodies in those series). Pick the part by the body's trade size: GKN-4 for 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inch, GKN-6 for 2-1/2 to 3 inch, GKN-7 for 3-1/2 to 4 inch.
3) Is a neoprene gasket suitable for an outdoor conduit body, or do I need something else?
Neoprene is the right call for outdoor and wet-location conduit bodies. The GKN gaskets are molded neoprene, which holds up to weather, sunlight exposure and temperature swings far better than paper or cork gaskets, and they are used specifically for outdoor electrical enclosure sealing and industrial conduit runs. Compress it evenly under the cover and don't over-tighten; crushing neoprene past its set point is what causes leaks later.
4) Can I reuse the old gasket, or should I replace it when I open a conduit body?
Replace it. Once neoprene has been compressed under a cover for years it takes a set and loses the rebound that makes the seal work, so pulling a cover for maintenance is the point to drop in a new GKN gasket. The procedure is straightforward: remove the old gasket, align the new one to the body's sealing surface, refit the cover and tighten evenly around the perimeter without crushing the neoprene.
5) Do GKN gaskets come as a single piece or in a bulk pack?
They're sold each, so you can buy one gasket for a single repair rather than a box. Thomas & Betts packs them 25 to an outer carton, which is worth knowing if you're standardizing a facility or re-gasketing a whole conduit run during a shutdown.
6) Are the Thomas & Betts GKN conduit body gaskets RoHS compliant?
Yes, the GKN neoprene gaskets are RoHS compliant, which matters on government, healthcare and education work where procurement specs call it out. The gaskets are black neoprene.
