Thomas & Betts AT-5 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Thomas & Betts AT-5 conduit body come with a cover and gasket, or do I order those separately?
The AT-5 body ships as a bare conduit body, sold each. You order the closure separately: cover CV-4 in die cast, or SCV-4 if you want stamped aluminum, plus a gasket, GKV-4 in composition or GKN-4 in neoprene. If you'd rather buy it as a set, Thomas & Betts packages the body, cover and gasket together under catalog number DAT-5-CG.
2) Will the AT-5 conduit body work on EMT, or only rigid conduit?
Threaded hubs only, so it is for rigid and IMC conduit. Plain EMT won't thread into it. If the run is EMT you'd need to transition with a set-screw or compression coupling to a threaded nipple, or use a body built for EMT instead.
3) How many conductors can I legally splice in the Thomas & Betts AT-5?
The AT-5 has a 32 cubic inch wiring chamber, and that volume is the number you use for box fill calculations when you are making splices inside it. Work your conductor count off the 32 cubic inches per the fill rules for the wire size you are pulling.
4) Can the AT-5 conduit body be used outdoors or in a wet location?
The threaded body holds a weather resistant conduit system when it is closed up with a cover and gasket, so the gasket is not optional outdoors. Pair it with CV-4 or SCV-4 and either the GKV-4 composition or GKN-4 neoprene gasket. Run it with the bare cover and no gasket and you lose that weather resistance.
5) Is a Type T conduit body the right choice, or should I use an LB or C body?
A Type T is a tee: three threaded openings, so it is what you use where a branch leaves the run or where you need to pull in two directions from one point. An LB or LL/LR handles a single 90 degree change of direction, and a Type C is a straight-through pull point. If you only need a pull point in a straight run or one elbow, you don't need the T. The AT-5 is the Type T body.
6) What are the overall dimensions of the AT-5 conduit body for tight clearances?
The published dimensions are A 7-1/4, B 7-7/8, C 2-3/4, D 2-3/4, E 4-3/16, F 3-17/32 and G 1-1/2 inches. The two largest figures, 7-1/4 and 7-7/8, are what to check against your available space when the body sits near a wall, strut, or another run. It weighs 1.74 lbs each.
7) Is the AT-5 aluminum or steel, and will it corrode on a coastal or wash-down job?
Die cast aluminum. That keeps the weight down at 1.74 lbs and avoids the rust you get from a damaged galvanized steel body, but aluminum is the wrong pick in direct contact with concrete or where it will see strong alkalis. The cover screws are retained stainless steel, so they won't rust out or drop into the chamber when you open it up. The part is RoHS compliant.
8) Is the Thomas & Betts AT-5 UL listed for an inspected commercial job?
Yes, the AT-5 carries a UL listing, which is normally what an inspector is looking for on a conduit body in a commercial or institutional installation. It is also RoHS compliant if your spec calls for that.
9) Can I buy a single AT-5, or is there an order minimum?
It is priced each, but it moves in multiples of two, with an inner pack of 2 and 10 to the outer carton. So a one-piece order rounds to two. Worth knowing if you are stocking a truck or filling an MRO crib order.
10) Will the smooth throat on the AT-5 let me pull THHN without nicking the insulation?
That's what the smooth throats are for. The openings are finished without the casting burrs that shave insulation, and the chamber is sized to give you room to get a hand in and make up splices rather than just feed through. Still observe your bend radius at the body itself.
