The NGP 16A (Anodized Aluminum) and 16DKB (Dark Bronze) Rain Drip Guards mount at the door head to deflect rain away from the door frame and threshold. 1) What length rain drip guard do I need for a standard 3'0" exterior door?
The NGP 16A/16DKB drip guard is made in 36, 40 and 42 inch lengths for a 3'0" leaf, and in 48 and 52 inch for a 4'0" leaf. A 36 inch piece matches a 3'0" door edge to edge; the 40 or 42 buys you a couple of inches past each jamb, which is what you want on an exposed entrance so runoff sheds clear of the frame instead of running down it. All of those sizes are made in both the clear anodized 16A and the dark bronze 16DKB.
2) Is there an NGP rain drip long enough to run across a pair of doors?
Pairs are covered. The long end of the NGP 16A/16DKB range runs 72, 76, 80, 99, 101 and 108 inches, so a 6'0" pair (72 inches of door) takes either the 72 for a flush match or the 76 or 80 to overhang the frame, and the 99 through 108 sizes cover wide entrance and storefront openings. Since the guard mounts at the head rather than on the leaves, a pair gets one continuous piece across both doors, so there is no joint sitting over the meeting stiles where water would find it.
3) How much room do I need above the door to mount an NGP 16A rain drip guard?
The extruded profile measures 2-1/2 by 1-1/2 inches with a 5/8 inch mounting flange. The flange is the leg the screws go through, so you need at least 5/8 inch of flat, solid surface at the head to land it on, plus 2-1/2 inches of clear space out from the door face for the projection to sit in. That projection is the number to check on openings with a surface closer, an overhead stop, or a shallow canopy or soffit above the head.
4) Can I install a rain drip guard without drilling into an aluminum storefront header?
There are two ways to hang the NGP 16A/16DKB. Six 3/4 inch stainless steel sheet metal screws come with it for a mechanically fastened install, or FATT (Fast Attach Tape) can be specified and the guard bonded on with no penetrations at all. The tape route is the one glass front installers use when they do not want fastener holes through a storefront header. Order the tape option up front, since it is a specified extra rather than something in the standard box.
5) Do I need a rain drip guard or a door sweep to stop water at my entrance?
They do different jobs and a wet entrance usually needs both. The NGP 16A/16DKB mounts at the head and throws runoff off the face of the opening before it reaches the frame and threshold, but it does not seal anything. Water and air moving under the door is a sweep or automatic door bottom, and infiltration around the jambs and head is perimeter gasketing. If the complaint is staining down the frame or puddling on the threshold, the drip is the fix. If the complaint is water or draft coming under the leaf, buy a bottom seal, because a drip guard will not change that.
6) Does the NGP 16A rain drip guard come with screws, or do I supply my own?
Six 3/4 inch stainless steel SMS screws ship with the guard, and the screw holes in the extrusion are already slotted, so there is no layout or drilling to do on the part itself. Stainless matters on a piece that lives outdoors above an entrance: the body is 6063-T5 aluminum and the fasteners are stainless, so there is no plain steel in the assembly to bleed a rust streak down the door face.
7) Can a rain drip be added to a door that is already hung, or does the frame have to be prepped?
Nothing gets mortised or machined. The NGP 16A/16DKB is a surface-applied extrusion that fastens through its 5/8 inch flange at the head, so it goes onto an existing opening with no prep to the door or frame beyond the screw holes. The slotted holes are there for exactly this situation: they let you shift the guard in the field to clear an existing anchor or fastener, or to true the run up on a head that is not dead level. This is a common retrofit on older entrances where water is tracking down the frame and onto the threshold.
8) What is the difference between the NGP 16A and the 16DKB, and can I get one finish across every door in my building?
Same extrusion, different finish: 16A is clear anodized aluminum, 16DKB is dark bronze anodized. Both are produced in every length in the range, 36, 40, 42, 48, 52, 72, 76, 80, 99, 101 and 108 inches, so a facility can standardize on a single finish and still get the correct size for every opening, single leaf through wide pair. Dark bronze is the one that goes unnoticed against bronze storefront and dark frames; the clear anodized reads as mill aluminum next to clear anodized storefront and hollow metal that has been painted light.

    Have not been on site to install yet, but was very disappointed to see units are cut after painting/anodizing. This leaves an unprotected exposed area on the ends.
