Nibco 3010750 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco 101 flared coupling be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The Nibco 101 heavy flared coupling is a bronze fitting whose use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service such as irrigation or other commercial and residential plumbing lines that are not drinking water.
2) What size tubing does the Nibco 101 flared coupling join?
Two sizes are made, 3/4 inch and 1 inch, and both are straight-size couplings, meaning the same size flare on each end rather than a reducer. Order 3/4 inch as part 3010500 and 1 inch as part 3010750. If you need to step between two sizes, this is not the fitting.
3) Do I need to solder the Nibco 101 coupling, or is it a mechanical joint?
No solder and no torch. Both ends are flare connections (FL x FL), so the tube is flared and drawn up against the fitting seat with flare nuts. That makes it usable where open flame is not allowed and where the joint may need to come apart later.
4) Is this Nibco coupling suitable for buried or underground irrigation service?
It is listed for irrigation use and the bronze body is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters when a brass alloy sits in aggressive water or soil. The alloy is ASTM B584 C84400, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.26.
5) What is the difference between a heavy flare coupling and a standard one?
The Nibco 101 is classified as a heavy pattern straight-size flared coupling, meaning a thicker cast bronze body than a light pattern fitting of the same nominal size. Spec it where the joint takes handling abuse or vibration, such as irrigation headers and mechanical runs.
