1) Can the Nibco 511 flared tee be used on potable water lines?
No. The 511 flared tee is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014. Put it on irrigation, or non-potable commercial and residential plumbing service only. For potable copper tube systems you need a lead-free wrought copper or lead-free brass fitting instead.
2) Does the Nibco 511 tee solder or does it take a flare nut?
It takes flare nuts, not solder. All three openings are flare connections (FL x FL x FL), so each leg mates with soft copper tube that has been flared with a flaring tool and a 45 degree flare nut. No torch, no flux, and the joint can be broken apart later. If your tube is hard drawn copper meant to be sweated, this is the wrong fitting.
3) Is the Nibco 511 a reducing tee or are all three ports the same size?
Straight size, so run and branch are all the same. The 1/2 inch version takes 1/2 inch flare on all three ports. If you need the branch to drop to a smaller tube, you would look for a reducing flare tee or add a flare reducer at the branch.
4) Will a bronze flare tee hold up in buried irrigation service?
Yes. The 511 is cast bronze and dezincification resistant, which is what matters for buried or wet-soil irrigation work where brass with high zinc content can fail over time. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.26, the standard for cast copper alloy flare fittings.
5) Do flare nuts come with the Nibco 511 tee?
The 511 is the tee body only. You supply the flare nuts and the flared soft copper tube for each of the three legs, plus a flaring tool sized to the tube. Nothing is soldered, so the only other thing on the job is a wrench to pull the nuts up.
