Nibco 6032700 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco 504 flare adapter be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The Nibco 504 flared male adapter is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it on non-potable work: irrigation, and commercial or residential plumbing lines that are not potable water. If you need a potable-rated flare adapter, you want a lead-free alloy version, not the 504.
2) What connections does the Nibco 504 adapter have on each end?
One end is a flare connection and the other is a male NPT thread (FL x M). It's the piece you use to take a flared copper tube run into female threaded pipe, a valve body, or threaded equipment. Straight size, so the flare and the thread are the same nominal size on any given fitting.
3) Is a bronze flare adapter better than brass for buried irrigation service?
The 504 is cast bronze to ASTM B584 C84400 and is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters in buried or aggressive-water service where common brass can lose zinc and fail. It is listed for irrigation as well as commercial and residential plumbing. The limit is the potable restriction, not the corrosion performance.
4) Do I need a flare nut and sleeve with the Nibco 504, or is it included?
The 504 is the adapter body only, with a flare seat on one side and male NPT on the other. The tube side is flared with a flaring tool and pulled up with a flare nut, so order the nut separately along with pipe thread sealant or PTFE tape for the NPT end. Material and workmanship on the fitting are per ASME B16.26.
5) Why use a flare adapter instead of a soldered copper male adapter?
A flare joint is mechanical, so it goes together with no torch, no flux and no open flame. That makes the 504 the choice where you cannot solder: in a finished space, near combustibles, on a line you may need to break apart later, or on underground irrigation runs where a serviceable joint is worth more than a permanent one. If the joint is going to be buried in a wall and never touched, a sweat male adapter is simpler and cheaper.
6) Will the Nibco 504 thread into a female iron pipe fitting or a threaded valve?
Yes. The threaded end is male NPT in the same nominal size as the flare end, so it makes up to any standard FIP port: iron pipe fittings, threaded valve bodies, pump and meter connections, hose bib bodies. Straight size only, so match the fitting size to the port size.
