The coupling features flared ends. The fitting provides a means of connecting two lengths of tube together. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Nibco 6010750 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Nibco 501 flare coupling on a potable water line?
No. The Nibco 501 flared coupling is cast bronze to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Put it on non-potable work instead, such as irrigation or other commercial and residential lines outside the drinking water system. For potable copper tube, you need a lead-free rated fitting.
2) What size copper tube does the Nibco 501 coupling join, and what sizes are made?
It joins two lengths of tube of the same size, flare to flare. Sizes run 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch. Both ends are the same size on every one, so there is no reducing version in the 501.
3) Do I need to solder the Nibco 501 coupling, or is it a mechanical joint?
No soldering. Both ends are flare connections, so the tube gets flared and drawn up against the fitting seat with a flare nut. That makes it a serviceable, no-flame joint, which is why flare is common on gas-adjacent and buried irrigation work where torch use is a problem.
4) Is the Nibco 501 coupling dezincification resistant, and does that matter underground?
It is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters when a bronze fitting sits in aggressive water or buried soil. That is the reason it holds up on irrigation lines where a standard brass fitting can lose zinc and fail at the joint.
5) What standard are Nibco 501 flare fittings built to?
Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.26, the standard for cast copper alloy fittings for flared copper tubes, and the casting alloy is ASTM B584 C84400. If your spec sheet calls out B16.26 flare fittings, this meets that call-out.
6) Does the Nibco 501 coupling come with flare nuts?
The 501 is the coupling body only, with a flare seat on each end. The flare nuts ride on the tube and are ordered separately, along with the flaring tool to form the tube ends. Plan on two nuts per coupling.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 3/4 inch flare coupling?
3/4 inch is Nibco part 6010500. The rest of the run: 1/2 inch is 6010250, 1 inch is 6010750, 1-1/4 inch is 6011000, 1-1/2 inch is 6011250 and 2 inch is 6011500.
8) Is this a cast fitting or a wrought one?
Cast bronze, not wrought copper. Cast bodies are what flare fittings are made from because the flare seat has to be machined into a thicker section than drawn tube gives you.
