Nibco 6046200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco 507 flare elbow be used on potable water lines?
No. The 507 cast bronze flare elbow is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Use it on non-potable work only: irrigation, and commercial or residential plumbing lines that are outside the potable water system. If the line feeds a fixture someone drinks from, you need a lead-free rated fitting instead.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 507 flared 90-degree elbow come in?
Three sizes: 1/2 inch (part 6046200), 3/4 inch (part 6046450), and 2 inch (part 6047150). All are straight size, meaning both ends match, so a 3/4 inch elbow takes 3/4 inch tube on both sides. If you need to change diameter at the turn you will need a reducing fitting plus this elbow, not this elbow alone.
3) Does the Nibco 507 elbow solder on, or does it take flare nuts?
Neither end is a solder socket. Both ends are flare (FL x FL), so this is a mechanical joint: you flare the tube end, slide a flare nut over it, and thread the nut onto the elbow. No torch, no flux. That makes it the fitting to use where you cannot open flame, or where the joint has to come apart again later.
4) What tubing works with a Nibco 507 flare elbow?
Anything you can put a proper 45-degree flare on and fit with a flare nut, which in practice is soft copper tube. The elbow is built to ASME B16.26, the standard covering cast copper alloy fittings for flared copper tube, so the flare geometry mates with standard flare nuts of the matching size. Hard drawn rigid copper will not flare without annealing first.
5) Will the Nibco 507 hold up in buried irrigation service?
It is listed for irrigation use and the casting is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that matters when a brass or bronze fitting sits in soil or hard water and the zinc leaches out of the alloy. The body is ASTM B584 alloy C84400 cast bronze.
6) Do flare nuts come with the Nibco 507 elbow, or do I order those separately?
The 507 is the elbow body only, with a male flare thread on each end. The flare nuts that pull the tube onto those seats are separate items, and you need one per end, so two per elbow. Order them to match the tube size you are running: 1/2, 3/4 or 2 inch.
7) What is the difference between a 90-degree elbow and a 1/4 bend on a Nibco fitting?
Same thing, two names for it. The 507 is listed as 90 Deg (1/4 Bend), since a quarter of a full 360-degree circle is 90 degrees. Plumbers working off DWV-style prints often say quarter bend; mechanical prints usually say 90. Either way this fitting turns the line a square corner.
