The 90-degree elbow features a flared end and a male NPT thread. The fitting provides a means of changing the pipeline direction 90 degrees, as well as adapting from a flared connection to a threaded connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. Nibco 6054050-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco 507-4 flare elbow be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The 507-4 is a cast bronze flare elbow made to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and its use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Use it on non-potable work such as irrigation or other commercial and residential plumbing services where a lead-free potable rating is not required. If the line is potable, specify a lead-free flare fitting instead.
2) What ends does the Nibco 507-4 90-degree elbow have, flare or thread?
One of each. It is an FL x M elbow: a flare end on one side and a male NPT thread on the other, so it turns the line 90 degrees and converts a flared tube connection to a threaded one in a single fitting. If you need flare on both ends, this is the wrong configuration.
3) Will the Nibco 507-4 hold up on buried irrigation lines?
It is listed for irrigation service and the cast bronze body is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters where a brass fitting sits in soil or hard water and loses zinc over time. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.26, the standard governing cast copper alloy flare fittings.
4) Do I need solder or flux to install a Nibco 507-4 elbow?
No torch work on the flare side. The flare end makes up mechanically against a flared tube with a flare nut, so it is a cold joint, useful in gas-service-free or fire-sensitive spaces. The male NPT end is threaded and needs pipe thread sealant or tape. Flare nuts and the flaring tool are not part of the fitting.
5) What is the difference between a flare elbow like the 507-4 and a sweat copper elbow?
A sweat elbow is soldered permanently to copper tube; the 507-4 uses a flared mechanical joint on one end that can be broken and remade for service, plus a male NPT thread on the other for connecting to threaded valves, meters or appliance connections. Pick the flare version where the joint has to come apart or where you cannot bring heat to the work.
