The PVC Schedule 40 90-degree elbow is used in cold water pressure distribution systems including irrigation, pool and spa, potable water and chilled water applications. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability and cost-effectiveness. PVC Schedule 40 is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco L075000 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Nibco 4607-9-3 PVC elbow connect to pipe, and do I need cement on both ends?
It's an S x F (NPT) 90 degree elbow: one end is a socket that solvent cements over Schedule 40 PVC pipe, the other is a female NPT thread that takes a male threaded pipe or nipple. So you cement one side and thread the other. Don't cement the threaded end, and don't over-torque it.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4607-9-3 PVC 90 elbow come in?
Three configurations: a straight 1/2 inch, a 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2 inch reducing version, and a 1 x 1 x 1/2 inch reducing version. The reducing sizes let you drop from a 3/4 or 1 inch run down to a 1/2 inch threaded takeoff without adding a separate bushing.
3) Can I use this PVC Schedule 40 elbow on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, and the fitting is intended for cold water pressure distribution. Domestic hot water and anything near boiler or heater outlet temperatures needs CPVC or metal instead.
4) Is this Nibco PVC elbow approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. It's certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and NSF U.P. Certified, and it's classified as a lead-free application, which is what a potable water spec calls for. Listed uses include potable water, chilled water, irrigation, and pool and spa.
5) Can I run compressed air through a PVC Schedule 40 elbow?
No. The instructions are explicit: do not test or use with compressed air or other gases. That applies to pressure testing too, so test with water only. This is a liquid-service fitting.
6) What standard does this Nibco PVC elbow meet for a plumbing spec submittal?
It's made to ASTM D2466 for Schedule 40 PVC socket fittings, with material per ASTM D1784 cell class 12454, plus NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and UL Listed 94V-0 flame rating. Body material is PVC and the fitting is white.
7) Will a PVC elbow hold up in a buried irrigation line or a pool return?
Yes, those are listed uses. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it has high corrosion and chemical resistance, which is why it's used for irrigation, pool and spa, and both commercial and residential plumbing distribution. Keep it off hot lines and off gas service.
8) Should I use a socket x thread elbow or a socket x socket one?
Use the S x F (NPT) version when the elbow has to land on a threaded component, a hose bibb, a valve, a sprinkler riser, or a metal nipple transition. If both sides are PVC pipe, a plain socket x socket elbow is the better joint because a solvent weld is stronger and has no thread to leak. Threads on plastic also need tape or approved thread sealant and hand-tight plus a small turn, no more.
9) Do the reducing versions of this Nibco elbow let me branch down without a bushing?
That's the point of them. The 3/4 x 3/4 x 1/2 inch (MPN L075100) and the 1 x 1 x 1/2 inch (MPN L075200) carry the larger socket size and finish in a 1/2 inch female NPT, so you get the size change inside the 90 instead of stacking a reducer bushing on a full-size elbow. Straight 1/2 inch is MPN L075000.
