1) What does a Nibco 4801-2-F flush bushing do, and how is it different from a reducer coupling?
The 4801-2-F is a PVC DWV flush bushing that reduces the line from one pipe size down to another. The spigot end slips into the hub of a larger fitting, and the smaller hub takes the reducing pipe, so the reduction happens inside the existing fitting socket rather than adding a length of fitting to the run. That is the practical difference from a reducer coupling: a bushing lets you drop a size in a hub you already have, which is what you want in a tight joist bay or against a wall. Both connections are solvent weld.
2) What pipe size reductions does the Nibco 4801 DWV flush bushing come in?
Ten reductions are offered: 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 2, 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 3, 4 x 2, 6 x 4, 6 x 3, 8 x 4 and 8 x 6 inches. The first number is the spigot end that goes into the larger hub, the second is the hub that takes the smaller pipe. Note the skip-size options (3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 2, 6 x 3, 8 x 4) if you are dropping two sizes in a single fitting.
3) Will a Nibco DWV bushing glue into Schedule 40 PVC drain pipe?
Yes. The bushing is Schedule 40 PVC and joins by solvent cementing, so it mates with standard Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe and fittings of the matching sizes. Prime and cement both the spigot end into the larger hub and the smaller pipe into the bushing hub. It will not thread onto ABS or cast iron, PVC solvent weld only.
4) Does the Nibco 4801 bushing meet code for a commercial DWV system?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. certified, which is the certification set inspectors look for on plastic DWV fittings. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing.
5) Which Nibco bushing do I order to drop a 4 inch closet bend down to 2 inch?
Order the 4 x 2 inch flush bushing, MPN K015600. The 4 inch spigot end solvent welds into the 4 inch hub and the 2 inch hub takes the 2 inch pipe. If you only need one size down, the 4 x 3 (K015550) is the fitting.
6) Is this a flush bushing or does it stick out of the fitting hub?
Flush, straight size. The body seats fully into the receiving hub so it does not add length to the run, which is what lets you reduce inside an existing fitting socket instead of cutting in a reducer. That matters on a tight vent stack takeoff or where a fitting sits close to framing.
7) What color is Nibco PVC DWV pipe fitting, and will it match my existing drain fittings?
White. That is the standard color for PVC DWV, so it matches white PVC drain, waste and vent work already in the building. If your existing lines are black ABS, this will not match and, more importantly, is not the same material, ABS and PVC take different cement.
8) Will PVC DWV fittings corrode in a waste line the way metal does?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to the corrosive and chemical loads a waste line sees. For a property manager replacing sections of an aging cast iron or galvanized drain, that is the main reason to standardize on PVC DWV, with the limit being the 140 F maximum service temperature.
