The PVC DWV coupling features a hub x hub connection and connects PVC DWV piping lengths with solvent weld connections. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K010400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Nibco 4801 PVC DWV coupling to join a 2 inch drain line to a 1-1/2 inch line?
Yes. The 4801 coupling comes in reducing sizes as well as straight ones. Reducing combinations are 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 2, 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 3, and 4 x 2 inches, so a 2 inch to 1-1/2 inch transition is a stock size (MPN K009600). Straight couplings run 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches. Both ends are hub, solvent weld, so the pipe slips inside the socket and is cemented.
2) Will a Nibco 4801 hub x hub coupling fit Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
That is exactly what it is cut for. The 4801 is a Schedule 40 PVC DWV fitting with hub (socket) ends on both sides, so nominal Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching size slides into the socket and is solvent cemented. It is made to ASTM D2665, the standard for PVC DWV pipe and fittings, which is what keeps the socket dimensions interchangeable with other D2665 pipe. It does not thread, so if you need a threaded transition you want a different fitting.
3) Do I need primer and cement for a Nibco 4801 coupling, or does it push together?
It is a solvent weld joint, not a push fit and not threaded. The pipe end goes into the hub socket and gets chemically welded with PVC primer and cement, which you buy separately. Nothing ships with the coupling, no gaskets and no clamps. Nibco publishes Plastic Fittings Installation Instructions covering the joining procedure.
4) Is the Nibco 4801 PVC DWV coupling approved for commercial buildings and code inspection?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 certification and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it is made to ASTM D2665. Those are the two marks an inspector looks for on plastic DWV. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing, so it is the same part whether you are piping an apartment stack or a single house.
5) Should I use a PVC coupling or an ABS one to repair my drain line?
Match the material already in the wall. The 4801 is white PVC, and PVC solvent cement will not properly bond black ABS pipe. If your existing DWV is ABS, a PVC coupling is the wrong part, and joining the two materials generally calls for a transition coupling rather than a solvent weld. If the existing pipe is white PVC DWV, the 4801 is the straight in kind replacement.
6) What size Nibco 4801 coupling do I need for a 4 inch building drain or a 3 inch stack?
Order by the nominal pipe size stamped on your existing pipe, not by the measured outside diameter. Straight 4801 couplings are stocked in 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inch, so a 3 inch stack takes the 3 inch (K009750) and a 4 inch building drain takes the 4 inch (K009950). The 6 through 12 inch sizes are there for larger commercial mains.
7) Can I run a PVC DWV coupling on a line that carries hot water from a dishwasher or commercial kitchen?
Watch the temperature. Maximum service temperature on the 4801 is 140 degrees F, which covers normal fixture drainage including residential dishwasher discharge. Sustained hotter waste, commercial dishwashers, boiler blowdown, or a lab drain, will exceed that and needs a higher temperature material such as CPVC DWV or cast iron. This is the spec that most often makes PVC DWV the wrong choice on a commercial job.
