The ABS DWV coupling features a hub x hub connection and connects ABS DWV piping lengths with solvent weld connections. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I009550 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5801 ABS DWV coupling join two lengths of 2 inch ABS drain pipe?
Yes. The 5801 is a hub x hub socket coupling for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe, and the 2 inch straight size is MPN I009550. Both ends are solvent weld sockets, so the pipe slips in and is cemented with ABS solvent cement. No threads, no gaskets, and nothing to tighten.
2) Does the Nibco 5801 come in a reducing size to go from 3 inch down to 2 inch ABS?
It does. Alongside the straight sizes (1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch), the 5801 is made as reducing couplings in 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 2, 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 3 and 4 x 2. The 3 x 2 is MPN I009800. Both sockets are still solvent weld hubs, so a reducer changes size without adding a bushing.
3) Can I use an ABS DWV coupling on a pressure line or a compressed air line?
No. The 5801 is a drain, waste and vent fitting only. Nibco states plainly that it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, and DWV fittings are not pressure rated. For water supply or air you need a pressure rated system, not ABS DWV.
4) Will an ABS coupling work on PVC DWV pipe, or do I need a transition fitting?
The 5801 is an ABS fitting and takes ABS solvent cement, so it is made to join ABS to ABS. Going to a different material, ABS DWV connects to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings rather than a straight solvent joint. If your existing stack is white PVC and the new pipe is black ABS, use a proper transition, not this coupling.
5) Is the Nibco 5801 ABS coupling approved for a commercial building drain system?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, is UL Listed 94V-0, and meets CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing. Those are the marks an inspector looks for on a DWV fitting.
6) What temperature can ABS DWV couplings handle in an unheated crawlspace or attic?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F, so an unheated crawlspace or a vent run through a cold attic is within spec, and so is normal hot waste discharge from a sink or dishwasher. Continuous high temperature process waste above 180 F is outside that range.
7) What do I need on hand to install a Nibco 5801 hub x hub coupling?
ABS solvent cement and a clean, square, deburred pipe end. The joint is solvent welded, so there is no gasket, no nut and no primer step the way a two part PVC joint runs. Nothing is included with the coupling itself, the cement is a separate buy. Nibco publishes Plastic Fittings Installation Instructions for cure times and joint procedure.
8) Will a Nibco 5801 coupling match the black ABS already in my building?
Yes, it is black ABS, the standard look of a DWV drain line, so it matches existing black pipe visually and in material. For a property manager standardizing repairs across units, the same 5801 body covers 1-1/4 inch through 6 inch plus six reducing combinations, so one fitting family handles branch drains up to a building main.
