The ABS DWV repair coupling features a hub x hub connection without a stop and repairs and/or connects lengths of ABS DWV piping. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I010850 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is the difference between a Nibco 5801-RP repair coupling and a regular ABS DWV coupling?
The 5801-RP is a repair coupling, which means there is no internal stop in the middle. A standard coupling has a center stop that limits how far the pipe can enter, so you can only use it when you can spring or rotate one pipe end. With no stop, the 5801-RP slides all the way onto one cut end, then slides back to center over the other, which is what lets you patch a section of installed ABS without cutting the line loose. Both ends are hub, so it is solvent welded onto pipe.
2) Can I use an ABS repair coupling on PVC drain pipe?
No. The 5801-RP is ABS, and ABS is joined with ABS solvent cement. PVC pipe needs a PVC fitting and PVC cement, or a transition method if you are joining the two materials. Putting ABS cement on a PVC joint is not a reliable bond. Use the matching material for the pipe you are repairing.
3) Is the Nibco ABS repair coupling approved for code-compliant plumbing work?
It is made to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. Those are the listings an inspector or a spec writer typically looks for on ABS DWV fittings.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5801-RP ABS repair coupling come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2 inch (I010800), 2 inch (I010850), 3 inch (I010900) and 4 inch (I010950). Those cover the usual DWV runs, 1-1/2 and 2 inch for fixture drains and vents, 3 and 4 inch for stacks and building drains.
5) Can I connect ABS to cast iron or copper with this coupling?
Not directly with the 5801-RP. It is hub x hub, meaning both ends take ABS pipe. Nibco notes ABS DWV can be connected to steel, copper or cast iron through the use of transition fittings, so you would run a short piece of ABS into a transition fitting or a no-hub band at the dissimilar material.
6) What temperature range can an ABS DWV repair coupling handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal drain, waste and vent duty including intermittent hot discharge from a dishwasher or laundry. It is not for pressure service, and Nibco is explicit that it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
7) What else do I need to install a Nibco ABS repair coupling?
The coupling itself is the only part supplied. You will need ABS solvent cement for the joints, a rag and applicator, and a square cut on the pipe with the burr cleaned off. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the cementing procedure, and their technical data sheets carry the engineering detail.
8) Can I use this repair coupling on a commercial building drain, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5801-RP is listed for commercial and residential plumbing, in drain, waste and vent service. For a property manager or facilities crew it is the standard patch fitting for a cut or damaged section of black ABS waste line.
9) Will this repair coupling match the black ABS already in my building?
Yes, the fitting is black, the standard color for ABS DWV, so it matches existing black ABS waste and vent piping visually and in material.
