1) What is a Nibco 5801-2-F ABS DWV flush bushing used for?
It reduces one drain, waste, and vent line size down to a smaller one inside a fitting hub. The spigot end solvent welds into the larger hub you already have, and the hub end accepts the smaller pipe. Because it is a flush bushing, it seats inside the fitting rather than adding a shoulder, so you are not adding takeout length to the run. Sizes run 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 2, 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 3, 4 x 2, and 6 x 4 inches.
2) Will a Nibco 5801-2-F bushing fit Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe?
Yes. The 5801-2-F is a Schedule 40 ABS DWV fitting, so it mates with standard Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe and fittings at both ends. The spigot side is sized like the outside of the pipe and drops into a hub; the hub side takes the smaller pipe. Both joints are solvent welded.
3) Can I use an ABS flush bushing to connect to cast iron, copper, or steel drain pipe?
Not directly. The bushing is solvent weld on both ends, so it joins ABS to ABS only. To tie into steel, copper, or cast iron you need a transition fitting between the systems; ABS DWV can also be joined by threading where a threaded fitting is used. Plan the transition as a separate fitting in the run.
4) Is the Nibco ABS DWV bushing approved for commercial buildings, and what standards does it meet?
It is used in both commercial and residential plumbing. No, and the color difference is the tell. This is a black ABS fitting, and ABS is not solvent welded to PVC with ordinary cement. If your existing DWV is white PVC, use a PVC bushing or a proper ABS-to-PVC transition. Match the material of the pipe you are cutting into before you buy.
8) Should I use a flush bushing or a reducing coupling to drop pipe size on a DWV line?
Use the flush bushing when you already have a fitting hub of the larger size and want to reduce right at it, with no added length. A reducing coupling is the choice when you are joining two lengths of pipe in the middle of a run and both ends are plain pipe. The 5801-2-F has a spigot on the large end, so it needs a hub to go into, not a pipe end.
9) Do I need anything else besides the bushing to make the joint?
Both ends are solvent weld, so you need ABS solvent cement rated for the job and a clean, square, deburred pipe end. No gaskets, no clamps, no threads on this fitting. The larger end is a spigot, so it also needs an existing fitting hub of that size to seat into, which is worth confirming before you cut.
10) What chemicals can an ABS DWV fitting handle in a commercial kitchen or janitorial drain?
ABS resists a wide range of materials, from sewage through common commercial and household chemical formulations, and tolerates a broad temperature span within the -40 F to 180 F service rating.
