1) What does the spigot x hub end on the Nibco 4807-2 street elbow actually mean for how I glue it in?
A street elbow has one male end and one female end. On the 4807-2, the spigot end is sized like pipe, so it slips straight into the hub of another DWV fitting, and the hub end takes a length of pipe. That saves you a stub of pipe and one extra joint when you need to turn 90 degrees right off a fitting. Both ends are solvent cement socket joints, not threaded, and both are the same nominal size (straight size, not reducing).
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4807-2 PVC DWV street elbow come in?
Six sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. Order by MPN, K058000 for 1-1/4 inch, K058050 for 1-1/2, K058150 for 2, K058200 for 3, K058300 for 4, and K058400 for 6 inch. All are straight size, so the spigot and hub are the same nominal size on any one of them.
3) How hot can the waste line get before a PVC DWV elbow is the wrong choice?
140 degrees F is the maximum service temperature on the Nibco PVC DWV elbow. That covers ordinary sanitary drainage and normal fixture discharge. For a line that sees sustained higher temperatures, commercial dishwasher or boiler blowdown waste for instance, PVC DWV is the wrong material and you want a high temperature drainage system instead.
4) Does this Nibco PVC 1/4 bend meet code for a DWV system in a commercial building?
The 4807-2 is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified for use in drain, waste and vent. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing. D3311 is the DWV fitting pattern standard, which is what makes it interchangeable with other manufacturers' DWV patterns of the same size.
5) Will this Nibco elbow match the Schedule 40 white PVC drain pipe already in the building?
Yes, if the existing system is white Schedule 40 PVC DWV. The 4807-2 is Schedule 40, white, and solvent welds to PVC DWV pipe of the same nominal size. It will not cement to ABS, the black drain pipe, and it will not join to cast iron or copper without a transition coupling. Check the color and the printing on the existing pipe before you buy.
6) Do I need anything besides the elbow to make up the joint?
The fitting only. Joints on the 4807-2 are made with PVC primer and PVC solvent cement, which are bought separately, and you will want a rag and a deburring tool for the pipe end. There are no gaskets, nuts or washers involved, and nothing threads on. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering cure times for the joint.
7) Can I use the 6 inch version on a building sewer or main stack?
The 4807-2 goes up to 6 inch, MPN K058400, which covers larger commercial mains and stacks as well as the smaller branch sizes. It is a Schedule 40 DWV fitting throughout the range, so the 6 inch behaves like the rest of the family: solvent cement, gravity drainage and venting, no pressure service.
8) Is a 1/4 bend the same thing as a 90 degree elbow?
Same fitting, two names. Plumbers call a 90 degree change of direction a quarter bend, because it is a quarter of a full circle. The Nibco 4807-2 is listed both ways, 90 degree and 1/4 bend. Ask for either and you are asking for this fitting.
9) Will a PVC drain fitting corrode in a floor drain or a chemical waste line?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to corrosive and chemical attack far better than metal drainage. That is a large part of why it gets specified for institutional and industrial waste. Two limits still apply on the 4807-2: 140 degrees F maximum service temperature, and drain, waste and vent service only.
