1) What does a closet street elbow like the Nibco 4807-2-CL connect to?
It's the fitting that drops off the bottom of a water closet flange. The spigot end goes into the flange hub, and the hub end takes your DWV pipe, so it turns the vertical outlet under the toilet into a horizontal run. That spigot x hub arrangement is what makes it a street elbow rather than a standard hub x hub 90.
2) What is the difference between the No Cap and With Cap version of the Nibco closet elbow?
Two orderable versions: K058250 without a cap, and K058270 with one. The capped version comes with a test/cleanout cap on the fitting, which is what you want when the drain has to be capped off and pressure or water tested before the toilet is set. If you're tying straight into a finished system, the no-cap K058250 is the one.
3) Will the Nibco 4807-2-CL work on Schedule 40 PVC drain pipe?
Yes. It's a Schedule 40 PVC DWV fitting, so it mates with Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching size using standard solvent cement. It is not a pressure fitting, DWV only, for drain, waste and vent.
4) Can I use this PVC closet elbow on a hot water or steam line, and what temperature can it take?
No. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, and it's a drainage fitting, not a pressure fitting. It also must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Normal toilet and lavatory discharge is well within the temperature limit; a boiler or hot process line is not.
5) Does the Nibco closet elbow meet code for a commercial building drain system?
It's manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, and it's NSF/ANSI Standard 14 listed and NSF U.P. Certified. Those are the listings a plumbing inspector looks for on DWV fittings, and they're the reason it's approved for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
6) Is the Nibco 4807-2-CL a 1/4 bend?
Yes, 90 degrees, which the plumbing trade calls a 1/4 bend. It changes direction a quarter turn coming off the closet flange into the horizontal branch.
7) Do I glue this closet elbow or can it be threaded?
Solvent cement. Both ends are slip joint sockets, spigot on one side and hub on the other, so it's primer and PVC cement, no threads and no gaskets. PVC DWV can also be joined by threading in the system generally, but this particular fitting's ends are cemented.
8) Can I use a PVC closet elbow to join to an existing ABS drain line?
This is a PVC fitting, white PVC DWV. ABS is a different material and most jurisdictions do not allow solvent cementing PVC directly to ABS; you'd use a mechanical transition coupling between the two systems. If your existing waste line is ABS, plan on that transition rather than gluing this elbow straight to it.
9) Will a PVC closet elbow corrode or rust in a slab or crawlspace?
No. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to the chemical exposure a waste line sees, which is why it gets buried under slabs and left in damp crawlspaces without protection. The fitting is white, matching standard PVC DWV pipe rather than the black of ABS.
