1) Will the Nibco 4807-LT long turn elbow glue onto Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
Yes. The 4807-LT is a hub x hub fitting, so both ends are sockets that take the outside diameter of Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe and are solvent cemented. No threads and no gaskets on either end. It is made in 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch pipe sizes, so match the fitting size to your pipe size, not to the socket measurement.
2) What is the difference between a long turn 90 elbow and a standard short turn 90 in a DWV drain line?
Both make a quarter bend, but the long turn version has a longer radius, so waste changes direction more gradually and the line drains with less turbulence and less chance of a solids hangup. That is why plumbers reach for a long turn at the base of a stack and where a horizontal drain turns down. A short turn 90 is the pick where you are tight on space, and in a vent it makes no practical difference. The 4807-LT is the long radius version.
3) Can I use a PVC DWV long turn elbow on a pressure water line?
No. The 4807-LT is a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent service only, not for pressurized supply. It also must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. For pressure work you need a pressure rated fitting, not DWV.
4) Does the Nibco 4807-LT meet code for a commercial building drain?
The fitting is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, which is the drain, waste and vent listing inspectors look for. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing.
5) Will this white PVC elbow match the black ABS drain pipe already in my building?
It will not. The 4807-LT is white PVC, and PVC and ABS are different materials that are not solvent welded to each other with ordinary cement. If the existing drain is black ABS, either stay in ABS or make the changeover with a mechanical transition coupling rather than gluing this fitting to it.
6) How hot can waste water get through a Nibco PVC DWV elbow?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That covers normal kitchen, lavatory and laundry discharge. If the line takes sustained higher temperature discharge, such as a commercial dishwasher or a boiler blowdown, PVC DWV is the wrong material for that run.
7) Is a long turn elbow the right fitting to turn a vertical stack into a horizontal drain?
That is the classic use for it. Turning vertical flow into horizontal is where the long radius earns its keep, because a short turn at the base of a stack concentrates the impact and slows the line. Use the 90 degree long turn there. Where you are joining a horizontal branch into a horizontal or vertical run instead, you want a wye and eighth bend combination, not a quarter bend elbow.
8) Do I need a hub x hub elbow or one with a spigot end?
Hub x hub means both ends are sockets, so the elbow accepts pipe pushed into each side. That is what you want when you are joining two lengths of pipe. If you need the elbow itself to slide into the socket of another fitting, that takes a spigot end version instead. The 4807-LT is sockets on both ends.
9) Does a PVC DWV elbow corrode or scale in a waste line the way cast iron does?
No. PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up against the chemical mix that goes down a commercial waste line. That is a large part of why property managers replacing corroded cast iron branches go to PVC DWV, along with the lighter weight and easier solvent cement joints.
