Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. 1) Will a Nibco 5807-LT long turn elbow solvent weld onto Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe?
Yes. The 5807-LT is a hub x hub fitting, so both ends are sockets that take Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe with ABS solvent cement. No threads, no gaskets, no transition adapter on either side. Sizes run 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch, and the socket has to match the pipe nominal size exactly.
2) What is the difference between a long turn 90 elbow and a regular short turn 90 in ABS DWV?
Both make a quarter bend, but the long turn has a longer radius, so waste and solids change direction more gradually and the fitting drains better. That is why a long turn like the 5807-LT is the one to use where a vertical stack turns horizontal, or anywhere flow needs to keep moving. A short turn 90 is the tighter fitting used where space is limited and the run is not carrying solids down a change of direction.
3) Can I tie ABS DWV into an existing cast iron or copper drain line with this elbow?
Not directly. The 5807-LT is socket on both ends and joins only to ABS by solvent cement. To meet cast iron, copper or steel you land the ABS in a transition fitting, then the elbow solvent welds to the ABS side. Plan the transition at the joint, not at the bend.
4) Can I pressure test a drain line with air if it is assembled with ABS fittings?
No. Nibco states plainly not to test or use ABS plastic fittings with compressed air or other gases. Test the line with water. This applies to the whole ABS DWV assembly, elbows included.
5) Does the Nibco 5807-LT ABS elbow meet code for a commercial building drain system?
It carries the standards a commercial DWV spec normally calls for: ASTM D2665, ASTM D2661, ASTM D3311, ASTM D3965, CSA B181.1, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 with NSF U.P. certification, and UL Listed 94V-0. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing.
6) What temperature range can ABS DWV fittings handle in an unconditioned crawlspace or attic?
Service range on the 5807-LT is -40F to 180F, which covers unheated crawlspaces, attics and normal hot waste discharge from sinks, tubs and dishwashers. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, so it never sees pressurized hot water supply.
7) Will a black ABS elbow match the drain piping already in my building?
ABS DWV is black, and the 5807-LT is black to match. If the existing drain lines in the building are white, that is PVC, and PVC fittings are not interchangeable with ABS by solvent cement, different pipe material and different cement. Confirm the pipe is ABS before ordering.
8) What size Nibco 5807-LT do I need for a 3 inch toilet drain versus a 2 inch lav or shower line?
