The PVC DWV double sanitary tee features all hub connections and a flowing sweep to aid in the evacuation of waste and used fluids. The tee allows for a connection to be made in continuous pipeline and branch out to a different direction. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K270450 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a double sanitary tee for two back-to-back toilets?
No, and this is the mistake that fails inspection. A double sanitary tee is a vent-and-drain fitting for branch connections; codes do not permit it for back-to-back water closets on a horizontal-to-vertical connection, where a double fixture fitting (double combination wye and 1/8 bend, or a double closet bend fitting) is required instead. The 4835 is right for back-to-back lavatories, sinks, tubs, and for vent connections. For paired toilets, order a double wye and 1/8 bend in PVC DWV at your stack size.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 4835 double sanitary tee come in, including reducing sizes?
Ten configurations, straight and reducing. Straight sizes are 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. Reducing patterns are 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 2 x 2, 3 x 3 x 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 4 x 4 x 3 x 3, and 4 x 4 x 2 x 2. The first two numbers are the run (the stack), the last two are the two branches. The 3 x 3 x 2 x 1-1/2 is the odd one worth noting: its two branches are different sizes, so it takes a 2 inch on one side and a 1-1/2 inch on the other.
3) Do I need a reducing double sanitary tee, or can I bush down a straight one?
Order the reducing pattern. If your stack is 3 inch and both branches are 2 inch, the 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 (MPN K270770) has the smaller sockets molded in, which keeps the swept branch geometry correct and saves two bushings and two extra joints. Bushing down a straight 3 inch tee adds glue joints inside a drain, and some inspectors will not accept a bushing in a DWV branch. Match the two branch sizes to your fixture arms and the run to the stack.
4) Is a double sanitary tee OK for a horizontal drain, or do I need a double wye?
Vertical only for drainage. A sanitary tee is designed for a horizontal branch entering a vertical stack, or for vent connections. Laid on its back in a horizontal drain line the swept branch no longer works with gravity and the fitting can trap solids and break the flow, which is why code restricts it to horizontal-to-vertical. For a horizontal-to-horizontal connection where two branches join a running line, use a double combination wye and 1/8 bend in PVC DWV at the same size.
5) Can I use this PVC tee on a hot water or drain line that carries boiling discharge?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. That covers normal residential and commercial drainage, including dishwasher and laundry discharge. It is not suitable where a line carries sustained high-temperature discharge, such as a commercial dish machine drain, a boiler blowdown, or a sterilizer waste; those runs need a high-temperature material. Also, do not test the system with compressed air or any other gas, and do not use it on a pressure line at all. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting.
6) What is a double sanitary tee used for on a DWV stack?
A double sanitary tee is the fitting that takes two branch drains into a vertical stack at the same elevation, one on each side, while the run continues straight through. The Nibco 4835 has all hub (socket) ends and a swept branch pattern that turns waste down into the direction of flow instead of dumping it in at a hard right angle. Typical use is back-to-back fixtures, two lavatories or two kitchen sinks on opposite sides of a common wall, tied into one stack with one fitting instead of two.
7) How do I glue the Nibco 4835 tee, and does it need primer?
All three (or four) openings are hub sockets for solvent weld, so the pipe slips into the socket and is joined with PVC primer and solvent cement. There are no threads and no gaskets. Cut the pipe square, deburr and chamfer the end, dry-fit to confirm the socket depth, then prime both the socket and the pipe end and cement while the primer is still wet. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions that cover cure times before pressure or flow.
8) Is the Nibco 4835 tee approved for potable and commercial plumbing work?
The 4835 carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, the drain, waste and vent listing, and it is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311. It is specified for both commercial and residential plumbing. For a facility spec sheet, those are the three lines your submittal reviewer will look for on a PVC DWV fitting.
9) What is the difference between a double sanitary tee and a double fixture fitting or cross?
A double sanitary tee has two opposed branches entering a straight run, each with a sweep in the direction of flow, so waste from both sides turns downward into the stack. A plain cross has square branches with no sweep and is a vent and non-drainage fitting only. A double fixture fitting (double combination wye and 1/8 bend) has a longer, gentler radius and is what code requires where the double sanitary tee is not allowed, such as back-to-back water closets. Same footprint idea, different geometry, and the geometry is what the inspector checks.
10) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 2 inch double sanitary tee?
The straight 2 inch is MPN K270450. If both branches are actually 1-1/2 inch off a 2 inch stack, you want K270500 instead, the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2. Ordering by pipe size alone is where these get mixed up, since the same nominal size exists in both a straight and a reducing pattern.
11) Will a PVC drainage fitting corrode or scale in a waste line?
PVC does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the reason it gets specified over cast iron in retrofit drainage and in chemically aggressive waste. It carries high corrosion and chemical resistance, it is light enough for one person to hang, and it goes together with solvent cement rather than caulked joints or a torch. For a property manager replacing failed cast iron branches, that combination is normally the whole argument.
