The ABS DWV double sanitary tee features all hub connections and a flowing sweep to aid in the evacuation of waste and used fluids. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I270450 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a double sanitary tee used for on a DWV stack?
A double sanitary tee takes two branch drains into a stack from opposite sides at the same elevation, so back-to-back fixtures (two lavatories or two kitchen sinks on either side of a common wall) can tie in with one fitting. The Nibco 5835 is the ABS DWV version, all-hub, with a swept branch pattern to help waste and used fluids clear the fitting. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, and Nibco is explicit that it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 5835 double sanitary tee come in, including reducing patterns?
Ten configurations. Straight sizes are 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. Reducing patterns are 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 2 x 2, 3 x 3 x 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 4 x 4 x 3 x 3, and 4 x 4 x 2 x 2. Note the 3 x 3 x 2 x 1-1/2 is the odd one out: the two branches are different sizes, so it suits a stack where one side takes a 2 inch line and the other a 1-1/2 inch line. The four-number call-out reads run, run, branch, branch.
3) Does the Nibco 5835 tee glue on, or does it thread?
Solvent weld, on every opening. The end connection is hub x hub x hub, meaning the pipe slips into a socket and is joined with ABS cement. No threads, no gaskets, no primer step of the kind PVC needs. ABS DWV systems can also be joined by threading elsewhere in the run, and transitions to steel, copper or cast iron are made with transition fittings rather than by cementing directly to those materials.
4) Is the Nibco 5835 ABS tee approved for potable-adjacent commercial work, and what standards does it meet?
For an inspector or a spec file, the 5835 carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified. That covers both commercial and residential plumbing use. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting, not a pressure or potable water fitting.
5) Do I need bushings to bring a 1-1/2 inch lavatory arm into a 2 inch stack?
No, order the reducing tee instead. The 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 pattern (Nibco I270500) takes a 2 inch run with both branches already sized at 1-1/2 inch, so the lavatory arms cement straight in. Same idea on 3 inch stacks with I270850, and on 4 inch stacks the 4 x 4 x 2 x 2 is I271200. Fewer joints than bushing down, and fewer places to leak.
6) Should I use a double sanitary tee or two separate sanitary tees for back-to-back fixtures?
The double tee handles both branches in one fitting at one elevation, which is what you want when the two fixtures sit back to back in a common wall and there is no room to stagger the connections vertically. Two single sanitary tees need vertical separation on the stack and more wall depth. Where your code officials restrict a double sanitary tee for back-to-back water closets, a double fixture fitting or a double combination wye and eighth bend is the usual substitute; for a fixture group that drains at different levels, use singles. The 5835 is built for the lavatory, sink and tub side of that decision.
7) What temperature range can an ABS DWV fitting handle? I have a commercial kitchen line.
Service temperature runs -40 F to 180 F. That covers dishwasher and commercial kitchen discharge in normal operation, but sustained flow above 180 F, boiler blowdown or steam condensate is outside the rating and needs a different material. On the cold end, the -40 F figure is why ABS is common in unheated crawl spaces and northern work.
8) Will the black ABS tee match the existing drain lines in my building?
The fitting is black, which is the standard ABS DWV colour and matches existing ABS piping. If the drains in your building are white, they are PVC, and a black ABS fitting will not cement to them. In that case order the PVC DWV equivalent or a transition fitting to join the two systems.
9) What is the Nibco part number for a 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 double sanitary tee in ABS?
That one is Nibco I270770 in the 5835 pattern. The other reducing 3 inch bodies are I270800 for 3 x 3 x 2 x 1-1/2 and I270850 for 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, and the straight 3 inch is I270700. Ordering by these numbers is the way to avoid getting a reducing pattern when you wanted straight branches.
10) Can a double sanitary tee be installed horizontally?
It belongs in a vertical stack. A sanitary tee's swept branch is designed to turn horizontal branch flow down into a vertical run; laid on its side in a horizontal drain line it obstructs flow and most inspectors will reject it. For a horizontal branch connection use a wye and eighth bend combination. The 5835's sweep is there specifically to help waste clear the fitting on the vertical.
11) Can I run drain cleaner or commercial chemicals through an ABS drain fitting?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it holds up in apartment and institutional drain stacks that see regular chemical cleaning. What it will not tolerate is pressure testing with compressed air or other gases, and heat above the 180 F service ceiling.
