The ABS DWV 90-degree sanitary tee with 90-degree left inlet features all hub connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I495350 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the left inlet on the Nibco 5871 tee fixed, or can I rotate it to the right side?
It's fixed. The 5871 is built with the 90-degree inlet on the left, so orientation is determined when you set the fitting on the stack. If the branch has to come in from the right, you need the right-inlet version of the fitting rather than this one.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5871 ABS sanitary tee come in?
Three combinations: 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 inch, 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch, and 4 x 4 x 4 x 2 inch. The first three figures are the run and branch, the last is the side inlet. So on a 3 inch stack you can take either a 2 inch or a 1-1/2 inch side connection, and on a 4 inch stack the side inlet is 2 inch.
3) Do I need to thread this fitting or does it glue on?
All four openings are hub, socket type, joined by solvent cement. The end connection is listed as solvent weld with a Hub x Hub x Hub configuration, so the pipe slips into the socket and is cemented. No threading and no gaskets. Use ABS cement (or an ABS-to-PVC transition cement if you are joining dissimilar plastics per the manufacturer's instructions).
4) Can I use this tee on a pressure line or test the system with compressed air?
No on both counts. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, and Nibco states plainly that ABS DWV fittings must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. Test with water. For pressurized supply work you need a pressure-rated fitting system, not DWV.
5) Does this Nibco ABS tee meet code for a commercial building?
The 5871 carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, is UL Listed 94V-0, and conforms to ASTM D2661, D2665, D3311 and D3965, plus CSA B181.1 for Canadian work. Nibco lists it for both commercial and residential plumbing. Confirm with your AHJ that ABS DWV is accepted in your jurisdiction, since some regions restrict it.
6) What is the difference between a sanitary tee with a side inlet and a plain sanitary tee?
The Nibco 5871 is a sanitary tee that carries an extra 90-degree inlet on the left side, so it takes a branch drain or vent connection in addition to the main run and the standard side branch. A plain sanitary tee gives you only the three openings. Use the side-inlet version where a second fixture drain, such as a lavatory or a tub vent, ties into the same stack at the same point instead of adding a separate fitting above or below.
7) What temperature range can this ABS drain fitting handle?
Service temperature runs from -40 F to 180 F. That covers normal household and commercial waste discharge, including dishwasher and laundry drainage, but it is not suitable for continuous high-temperature process waste above 180 F.
8) Can I tie this ABS tee into an existing cast iron or copper drain line?
Not directly. ABS DWV joins to itself by solvent cement or threading; to connect to steel, copper or cast iron you need transition fittings, which are ordered separately. Plan that connection before you cut the stack.
9) Is the Nibco 5871 a reducing tee?
Yes, in the side inlet. Nibco classes it as a reducing sanitary tee with one left inlet: the run and branch stay full size while the left inlet steps down, for example 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch. That lets a smaller fixture drain or vent land on a full-size stack without a separate bushing.
10) Is this fitting black ABS or white PVC?
Black. It's ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), so it matches black ABS DWV pipe on the job. If your existing drain lines are white PVC, this fitting is a different material and requires the correct transition cement or a mechanical coupling rather than a straight ABS glue joint.
