The PVC DWV 90-degree sanitary tee with left inlet features all hub connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K495350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 4871 sanitary tee glue onto standard PVC DWV pipe, or does it thread on?
The 4871 is solvent weld on every opening. All four connections are hubs (hub x hub x hub plus the inlet hub), so the pipe slips into the socket and gets cemented. No threads, no gaskets. Size it to Schedule 40 DWV pipe.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 4871 left inlet sanitary tee come in?
Three combinations: 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 inch, 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch, and 4 x 4 x 4 x 2 inch. The first three figures are the run and branch, the last is the side inlet. So on a 3 inch stack you pick the inlet to match either a 2 inch or a 1-1/2 inch line, and on a 4 inch stack the inlet is 2 inch.
3) I need to pick up a lavatory drain into a 3 inch stack without adding another fitting. Will a left inlet sanitary tee do it?
That is exactly what the left inlet is for. The 4871 is a reducing sanitary tee with one left inlet, so the main branch takes the primary connection and the side inlet picks up a second fixture drain at the same fitting. On a 3 inch stack the inlet is available at 1-1/2 inch, which suits a lavatory arm, or 2 inch for a tub or shower.
4) Does it matter which way I orient a left inlet sanitary tee when I glue it in?
Yes, and this is the one that gets fittings cut back out. It is a left inlet fitting, so the side inlet lands on a fixed side once the tee is oriented with the branch facing you. Dry fit, confirm the inlet is pointing at the drain you intend to catch, then cement. If your fixture comes in from the other side you need the right inlet version instead, not this one.
5) Can I use the Nibco 4871 PVC tee on a hot water or pressure line?
No. This is a DWV drain, waste and vent fitting, not a pressure fitting, and maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Do not test or use it with compressed air or other gases. Sustained hot discharge above 140 F, boiler blowdown or a commercial dishwasher line will exceed what it is rated for.
6) Does the Nibco 4871 meet code for a plumbing inspection on a commercial job?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified for use in drain, waste and vent systems. Those are the marks an inspector looks for on PVC DWV fittings. The fitting is listed for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
7) What is the difference between a sanitary tee and a straight tee for a drain line?
A sanitary tee has a swept, curved branch that turns waste into the direction of flow, which is why it is used to change direction on a drain or vent. A straight tee has a square 90 degree branch and is a vent and pressure fitting, not a drainage one; it will hang waste up and most inspectors will fail it below the flood rim. The 4871 is the sanitary pattern, with the added left inlet for a second connection at the same joint.
8) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 4 inch stack with a 2 inch side inlet?
K495500 is the 4 x 4 x 4 x 2 inch 4871. For a 3 inch stack, K495350 gives a 2 inch inlet and K495400 gives a 1-1/2 inch inlet. All three are the same left inlet sanitary tee pattern in Schedule 40 PVC DWV.
9) Will PVC DWV fittings hold up in a building with aggressive drain chemicals or a corrosive waste stream?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and these fittings carry high corrosion and chemical resistance. That is the usual reason a facility specifies PVC over cast iron for waste and vent. The limit is heat, not chemistry: stay at or below 140 degrees F service temperature.
10) What color is the Nibco 4871, and will it match the DWV fittings already in my building?
White, which is the standard PVC DWV color and what you will normally find on existing white PVC waste and vent piping. If your building is piped in black ABS, this is not a match; ABS and PVC take different cement and are a different material system.
