1) What does the Nibco 4872 sanitary tee with right inlet actually do in a DWV stack?
The 4872 is a PVC DWV sanitary tee with an added 90-degree side inlet on the right, all four openings hub. The run takes the vertical drain line, the sanitary branch picks up a horizontal waste line with the sweep that keeps solids moving, and the right inlet gives you a second connection off the side of the same fitting. That saves stacking two fittings where a lav or a vent arm ties in near a stack connection. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, not a pressure fitting.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4872 right inlet sanitary tee come in?
Three combinations, each a reducing pattern: 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 inch (K500350), 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch (K500400), and 4 x 4 x 4 x 2 inch (K500500). The first three numbers are the tee body, the fourth is the side inlet. So a 3 inch stack takes either a 2 inch or 1-1/2 inch right inlet, and a 4 inch stack takes a 2 inch inlet.
3) Is the Nibco 4872 tee threaded or does it get solvent cemented?
Solvent weld, hub x hub x hub, with the right inlet also a hub. Every opening is a socket that takes the outside diameter of Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe, primed and cemented. There are no female threads on it, so if you need a threaded takeoff you will have to cement in a separate adapter.
4) Can I use a Nibco 4872 PVC sanitary tee on a hot water or dishwasher drain line?
Only within limits. Maximum service temperature on this PVC DWV fitting is 140 degrees F. Normal fixture drainage, including a dishwasher or laundry discharge, sits under that, but a commercial dish machine or a boiler blowdown line can exceed it. For sustained discharge above 140 F you need a higher temperature drainage material, not PVC DWV.
5) Is the Nibco 4872 DWV tee approved for potable or compressed air use?
Neither. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting, so it is not a pressure-rated fitting and carries no potable water pressure rating. Nibco is explicit that these are not to be tested or used with compressed air or other gases, which matters when someone on the crew wants to air test the rough-in. Water test or the test method your inspector accepts for DWV, not air.
6) What standards does the Nibco 4872 PVC DWV tee meet for a permitted commercial job?
It is made to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified. D3311 is the DWV fitting pattern standard, which is why it will lay out with other listed DWV fittings from any manufacturer. Those markings are what an inspector looks for on a commercial or residential drainage rough-in.
7) Do I need a separate reducer to land a 1-1/2 inch lav arm on a 3 inch stack?
Not with the 4872. The reducing pattern builds the size change into the fitting: the 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch version (K500400) takes a 1-1/2 inch inlet straight into a 3 inch body, and the 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 inch version (K500350) takes 2 inch. That is one cemented joint instead of a bushing plus a fitting, and it keeps the connection tighter to the stack in a stud bay.
8) Will the Nibco 4872 match the white PVC drainage already in my building?
It is white PVC, the standard color for PVC DWV, so it matches existing white PVC drainage lines visually and in material. Where it will not match is black ABS. PVC and ABS should not be solvent cemented to each other with standard cement; a mechanical transition coupling is the accepted way across that joint.
9) How does PVC hold up in a drain line compared to metal fittings for a maintenance department?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is the practical argument for it on a repipe where the old galvanized or cast iron drainage has closed up with scale. It also handles the chemical exposure typical of drainage. The tradeoffs are the 140 degree F service temperature ceiling and the fact that joints are permanent once solvent cemented, so cut and coupling repairs are the way back into the line.
