1) What is a double sanitary tee with side inlets used for on a DWV stack?
The Nibco 4870 is a sanitary tee with 90-degree right and left inlets, all hub connections, used to change the direction of flow in a drain, waste and vent system. The run takes the vertical stack, and the two side inlets let you bring in horizontal branch drains from both sides at the same elevation, so two fixtures back to back tie into one fitting instead of two stacked tees.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4870 sanitary tee come in?
Three combinations: 3 x 3 x 3 with 2 inch inlets (K490350), 3 x 3 x 3 with 1-1/2 inch inlets (K490400), and 4 x 4 x 4 with 2 inch inlets (K490500). The first three figures are the main run and branch, the last two are the right and left side inlets, so it's a reducing fitting at the inlets in every size.
3) Do the Nibco 4870 tee ends thread on, or do they have to be solvent cemented?
All five openings are hub (socket) ends, joined by solvent cement. There is no threaded port on the fitting, so if you need a threaded transition you'll add a separate male or female adapter downstream of the hub.
4) Will this PVC DWV tee fit Schedule 40 DWV pipe I already have on the job?

5) Is this Nibco sanitary tee approved for potable water or pressure lines?
No. It's a drain, waste and vent fitting only, not a pressure fitting. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F, and Nibco states it must not be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. For supply piping you need a pressure-rated system, not DWV.
6) Does the Nibco 4870 PVC tee carry an NSF listing for a commercial inspection?

7) Can I run the two side inlets on a sanitary tee horizontally for back-to-back fixtures?

10) Will a PVC DWV fitting corrode or scale in a waste line?
PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to corrosive and chemical waste streams. That's part of why it's specified so widely for DWV over metal. Keep it under the 140 degree F service limit.
