The ABS DWV 90-degree sanitary tee with 90-degree right inlet features all hub connections and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I500350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 5872 ABS sanitary tee with side inlet come in?
Three combinations: 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 inch (MPN I500350), 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 inch (I500400), and 4 x 4 x 4 x 2 inch (I500500). The first three numbers are the main tee, the fourth is the right side inlet, which is why it is a reducing fitting. If you need a 1-1/2 inch side inlet you are on the 3 inch body only; the 4 inch body takes a 2 inch inlet.
2) Can I tie an ABS sanitary tee into an existing cast iron or copper drain line?
Not directly. The 5872 has solvent weld hubs only, so it bonds to ABS pipe. To reach cast iron, copper, or steel you use a transition fitting at the changeover point and then run ABS from there into the tee. Nibco states ABS DWV connects to those materials through transition fittings.
3) Is the Nibco 5872 ABS tee approved for potable-adjacent commercial work, and what standards does it meet?
It is built to ASTM D2665, D3965, D2661 and D3311, carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. certification, and is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. That is the package an inspector or a spec writer on an institutional job normally wants to see on a DWV fitting, and it is approved for both commercial and residential plumbing systems.
4) Can I pressure test a DWV drain line with air after installing ABS fittings?
No. Nibco is explicit: do not test or use ABS DWV with compressed air or other gases. Test with water. This applies to the whole ABS DWV system, tee included, and it is a safety instruction, not a preference.
5) Does the side inlet on the Nibco 5872 come left or right handed?
Right hand only. The 5872 is the 90-degree right inlet version, so orientation matters when you dry fit it. Hold the fitting the way it will sit in the wall with flow going down; if the branch needs to come off the other side, the right inlet tee is the wrong part for that opening.
6) What temperature can an ABS DWV fitting handle, and can I use it on a hot waste line?
Service range is -40F to 180F. That covers normal sanitary waste including dishwasher and laundry discharge, but it is not a fitting for continuous high-temperature process waste above 180F. ABS also resists everything from sewage to household chemical formulations, which is why it holds up on ordinary drain duty.
7) Do I need anything besides the fitting to install a Nibco ABS sanitary tee?
You supply the ABS solvent cement and the pipe. The tee ships as the fitting only, with plain hub sockets, no gaskets, no clamps, no threads to seal. Cut square, deburr, dry fit for the inlet orientation, then cement. Nibco publishes plastic fittings installation instructions covering the joining procedure.
8) Is black ABS the same as white PVC DWV for a remodel, or do I have to match what is in the building?
Match what is there. This tee is black ABS, and ABS cement and PVC cement are not interchangeable. If the existing stack in the building is white PVC DWV, running an ABS fitting into it means a mechanical transition, not a solvent joint. For a property manager standardizing across units, ABS is the lightweight, easy-handling option and this fitting keeps that system consistent.
9) Should I use a sanitary tee with a side inlet or a separate wye and a regular tee?
The right inlet sanitary tee does in one fitting what would otherwise take a tee plus a second branch fitting, which saves vertical space in a tight chase and cuts one joint out of the assembly. Use it where a fixture branch lands close to the main connection. Where the branch is far enough down the stack to fit its own fitting, or where you need the branch on the left, a separate fitting is the way to go.
10) Can the Nibco 5872 be used on a vent line as well as a drain?
Yes, it is a DWV fitting, rated for drain, waste and vent service. Same fitting, same solvent weld hubs. Flow direction only matters on the drain side, so on a vent run the right inlet is just a branch takeoff.
