Nibco I490350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size branch inlets does the Nibco 5870 double sanitary tee with side inlets come in?
Three configurations are built. A 3 inch run with 2 inch right and left inlets (I490350), a 3 inch run with 1-1/2 inch right and left inlets (I490400), and a 4 inch run with 2 inch inlets (I490500). The two side inlets are always a matched pair, so you cannot get a 2 inch on one side and a 1-1/2 inch on the other. Every opening is a hub, including the inlets.
2) Can I use a Nibco 5870 ABS sanitary tee to connect back-to-back bathroom fixtures on a common stack?
That is what the double sanitary tee with 90 degree right and left inlets is for. The main run is vertical through the stack and the two side inlets take branch drains from opposite sides at the same elevation, so two fixtures across a common wall land on one fitting. The 3 x 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 handles 2 inch branch arms, the 3 x 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 handles 1-1/2 inch, and the 4 inch body takes 2 inch inlets on a 4 inch stack. It is a DWV drain, waste and vent fitting only.
3) Do I need to thread or glue the Nibco 5870 ABS DWV tee, and what cement do I use?
All five openings are hub sockets joined by solvent weld, so the pipe slips into the socket and is bonded with ABS solvent cement. No threads, no gaskets, no primer step of the kind PVC needs. ABS DWV can also be joined by threading elsewhere in the system, and it ties into steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings when you are stubbing into an existing building drain.
4) Will a Nibco 5870 ABS fitting glue to my existing PVC drain line?
No. ABS and PVC are different resins and do not solvent weld to each other reliably. The 5870 is ABS, black, and belongs on an ABS DWV system cemented with ABS solvent cement. If the existing line is PVC, use a mechanical transition coupling at the changeover rather than trying to cement the two together. Within an ABS run it also mates to steel, copper or cast iron through transition fittings.
5) Is the Nibco 5870 ABS sanitary tee Schedule 40, and will it fit standard Schedule 40 DWV pipe?
Schedule 40 is the wall spec, and the hubs are sized for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe in the nominal sizes listed, 3 inch and 4 inch runs with 1-1/2 or 2 inch side inlets. Manufactured to ASTM D2661 and D3311 for ABS DWV pipe and fittings, plus ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965 and CSA B181.1.
6) Does the Nibco 5870 ABS DWV tee carry NSF certification for a code inspection?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, and it is UL Listed 94V-0 for flammability. Those, along with ASTM D2661, D3311, D2665, D3965 and CSA B181.1, are the listings an inspector or a spec writer on an institutional job will be looking for on an ABS drain fitting.
7) What temperature can ABS DWV drain fittings handle, and can I run hot water waste through one?
Service range is -40 F to 180 F, which covers dishwasher and laundry discharge as well as unheated crawl spaces and attics. What it must never see is compressed air or other gases, for testing or for service. Fill and test with water only.
8) Should I use a double sanitary tee or two separate sanitary tees for two fixtures on the same stack?
A double sanitary tee like the 5870 puts both branch inlets at the same elevation on one fitting, so back-to-back fixtures across a common wall connect with one glue-up and no offset. Two single tees stacked means extra pipe between them and the two fixtures land at different heights, which can matter when you are fitting inside a 2x4 or 2x6 wall. Many codes restrict double sanitary tees for horizontal-to-vertical drainage of water closets, so confirm your local code allows the fitting for the fixtures you are draining before you cement it in.
9) Is the Nibco 5870 double sanitary tee approved for commercial buildings or is it residential only?
Both. The fitting is specified for commercial and residential plumbing on drain, waste and vent service, which is why it shows up in multi-family stacks and light commercial restrooms as often as in houses. ABS is light enough to hang overhead without heavy support labor and cuts and cements fast on site.
