The PVC DWV P-Trap features a hub x hub connection and provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K565400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Nibco 4885 PVC P-trap glue onto Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe, or do I need a slip-joint trap?
The 4885 is a solvent weld trap, hub x hub on both ends, sized to Schedule 40 PVC DWV. Both ends get primed and cemented onto the pipe, so it becomes a permanent joint in the drain line. If you need to break the trap apart to snake it or clear a stoppage under a lavatory, this is the wrong trap and you want a slip-joint version instead. Under a sink where the tailpiece has to come off, plumbers usually solvent weld the 4885 as a trap in a concealed or below-floor location and put the serviceable connection above it.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4885 P-trap come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2 inch (K565300), 2 inch (K565400), 3 inch (K565450) and 4 inch (K565500). Match the size to the drain line you are tying into, not to the fixture outlet. A 1-1/2 inch is the usual lavatory and small fixture trap, 2 inch handles showers, floor drains and kitchen lines, and the 3 and 4 inch sizes are for larger floor drains and mains where a trap is required on the line.
3) Can I use a PVC DWV P-trap on a commercial job, or is it residential only?
Both. The 4885 is rated for commercial and residential plumbing, and it carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified, which is what most inspectors look for on a plastic DWV fitting. It also meets ASTM D2665 and D3311. Those are the marks that let it pass on a spec job as well as a house.
4) How hot can the water be through a PVC DWV trap? Will a dishwasher or commercial kitchen discharge hurt it?
Maximum service temperature on this PVC trap is 140 degrees F. Intermittent household dishwasher and laundry discharge sits under that. A commercial kitchen line carrying sustained high temperature wash water, or anything discharging near boiling, is past what PVC DWV is rated for, and that job wants a different material. Check the actual discharge temperature of the equipment before you commit to PVC on a food service fit-out.
5) Does a solvent weld P-trap keep sewer gas out on its own, or do I need a vent too?
The trap holds a water seal in the arc of the bend, and that seal is what blocks sewer gas from coming back up through the fixture. It does not replace venting. Without a vent, the discharge from the fixture can siphon that water seal out and the gas comes through anyway. Plan the trap and its vent together on any DWV run.
6) What else do I need to install a Nibco 4885 PVC trap?
PVC primer and solvent cement, and that is the joint. No gaskets, no washers, no nuts. The trap ships as the bare fitting, so the trap arm, any adapter to a metal or cast iron line, and the fixture tailpiece connection are all separate parts. Both hubs are plain socket ends, so anything threaded on your run needs a male adapter between it and the trap.
7) Will this PVC trap hold up in a corrosive drain line, like a shop or lab waste line?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it has high chemical resistance, which is why it goes into waste lines that would eat metal pipe. The two limits to watch: 140 degrees F max service temperature, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. That air test rule is not advisory. Pressure test PVC DWV with water only.
8) Is this trap white PVC or the black ABS kind, and can I mix the two?
White PVC, Schedule 40. If the existing drain in the building is black ABS, you are looking at two different materials that are not solvent welded to each other with ordinary cement. Joining PVC to ABS is done with a transition coupling or a transition cement, and many jurisdictions restrict which is acceptable. Confirm what colour and material your existing line is before ordering.
9) I am standardizing traps across a building. Is the Nibco 4885 the same trap in every size?
Same fitting across all four sizes, same PVC DWV material, same hub x hub solvent weld ends, same Schedule 40 sizing. Only the pipe size changes, so a maintenance crew stocking 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch covers the great majority of fixture traps in a multi-family or institutional building with one part family and one cement.
