The PVC DWV P-Trap features a union joint and hub x hub connection. The P-Trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K006150 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 4895 P-trap work with 1-1/2 inch PVC drain pipe under a sink?
Yes. The 4895 comes in 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch pipe sizes, so a 1-1/2 inch tubular PVC drain line is a direct match. Both ends are hubs (socket), so the trap slips over the outside of the pipe and gets solvent cemented. Order MPN K005950 for 1-1/2 inch, K605000 for 1-1/4 inch, K006150 for 2 inch.
2) Does the Nibco 4895 P-trap glue on or thread on?
It glues. Both ends are solvent weld hubs, so you cut the pipe square, prime and cement it into the socket. There are no slip nuts and washers on the inlet or outlet, which is the difference between this and a tubular trap you can take apart with a wrench. The union joint in the middle is what lets you break the trap for service without cutting the cemented joints.
3) Can I use the Nibco 4895 PVC trap on a commercial job, or is it residential only?
Both. The 4895 is rated for commercial and residential plumbing, it is Schedule 40 PVC for drain, waste and vent service, and it carries ASTM D2665 and D3311 plus NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF U.P. certification. That combination is what most inspectors and specs are looking for on a DWV trap.
4) Can a PVC P-trap handle hot water from a dishwasher or a commercial kitchen sink?
Maximum service temperature on this PVC trap is 140 degrees F. Normal lavatory and kitchen sink drainage is fine. Sustained discharge above 140, such as a commercial dishwasher rinse or a boiler blowdown line, will exceed what the PVC is rated for, and you should be looking at a different material for that drain.
5) What size Nibco 4895 P-trap do I need for a lavatory versus a kitchen or floor sink?
Sizing follows the fixture drain, not preference. The 4895 is offered in 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. 1-1/4 is the usual lavatory size, 1-1/2 covers kitchen sinks, laundry and most tubs and showers, and 2 inch is what you use on larger commercial fixtures and floor sinks. Match the trap to the size of the DWV pipe you are cementing into, since these are hub connections and will only accept the pipe size they are made for.
6) What is the point of a union joint on a PVC DWV P-trap?
The union nut lets you take the trap apart in place. On a solvent welded trap without one, clearing a stoppage or pulling the trap means sawing out the fitting and gluing in a new one. With the union you back off the nut, separate the two halves, clear it, and reassemble. That is the reason to spec the 4895 over a plain glue-in P-trap on any fixture that gets hair, grease, or dropped jewelry.
7) Will this Nibco trap corrode or rust in a janitor sink or lab drain?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to a wide range of chemicals, which is why it gets specified for mop sinks, utility drains and light lab waste. The limit is heat, not chemistry: keep the discharge at or below 140 degrees F. Also do not pressure test this line with compressed air or any other gas.
8) Can I use this PVC trap on a vent line or a pressurized drain test?
It is a DWV fitting, so it belongs on gravity drain, waste and vent piping only. Never test or use it with compressed air or other gases. Air testing plastic DWV is what turns a cracked fitting into flying shrapnel, so any test on this line should be a water test.
9) How do I keep sewer gas out of the building with a P-trap?
The arc of the trap holds a standing column of water after every use, and that water seal is what blocks sewer gas from coming back up the drain into the room. It only works if the trap stays wet, so floor drains and seldom-used fixtures need periodic priming or they will evaporate dry and the gas comes through.
10) Is the Nibco 4895 white PVC or gray? Will it match my existing drain lines?
White. It is standard white PVC DWV, so it blends with typical white Schedule 40 drain, waste and vent piping. If the existing lines in the building are black ABS, this is not the same material and should not be solvent welded to it with PVC cement.
