The P-Trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. 1) Will the Nibco 5892 P-trap connect to my existing 1-1/2 inch tailpiece and drain line?
The 5892 is a hub by slip joint trap, so one end takes solvent-cemented ABS pipe at the hub and the other end is a slip joint that takes a tubular tailpiece with a nut and washer. It comes in 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch, and a 1-1/2 by 1-1/4 inch reducing version, so a 1-1/2 inch lav or sink tailpiece is covered directly, and the reducing size handles a 1-1/4 inch tailpiece going into 1-1/2 inch drainage.
2) Can I use an ABS P-trap on a commercial building drain, or is it residential only?
ABS DWV traps like the 5892 are used in both commercial and residential plumbing. The body is Schedule 40 ABS and the product carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, UL Listed 94V-0, NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified. It is drain, waste, and vent service only, not pressure and never compressed air or gas.
3) Can I connect an ABS trap to cast iron or copper drain piping?
Not directly. ABS DWV joins by solvent cement or threading; to tie into steel, copper, or cast iron you need transition fittings at the changeover. Plan that fitting into the takeoff, because the hub end of the 5892 is sized for ABS pipe, not for a metal spigot.
4) Should I order the 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 reducing trap or a straight 1-1/2 inch?
Match the tailpiece and the drain separately. A standard lavatory usually drops a 1-1/4 inch tailpiece into a 1-1/2 inch drain, which is exactly what the 1-1/2 by 1-1/4 version handles. If both the fixture outlet and the drain are 1-1/2 inch, as on most kitchen sinks, take the straight 1-1/2 inch. The 1-1/4 inch is for a fully 1-1/4 inch older lav rough-in.
5) What is the union joint on the Nibco 5892 ABS trap for?
The union nut lets you break the trap apart at the joint to clear a stoppage or pull the trap for service without cutting the cemented ABS pipe. That is the practical difference between the 5892 and a one-piece cemented P-trap: on a maintenance route where traps get pulled, the union saves you a repair coupling every time.
6) Will an ABS trap hold up to boiling water from a kitchen sink or a dishwasher discharge?
Service range on the ABS is -40 F to 180 F. Ordinary hot water and dishwasher discharge sit inside that; a sustained flow above 180 F does not, so on a commercial kitchen line running near-boiling waste you want a trap rated for it instead. ABS also resists sewage and common household chemical cleaners.
7) Can I pressure test an ABS DWV trap with air?
No. Do not test or use ABS DWV with compressed air or other gases. Test it with water. This is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, and air testing plastic DWV is how people get hurt.

10) Is the Nibco 5892 trap black or white, and does that matter for an exposed installation?
It is black, which is standard for ABS. Under a vanity or in a cabinet nobody sees it, but on an exposed application where the trap is visible, a chrome or white tubular trap is the usual choice instead. ABS is also light enough to hold in place one-handed while you set the joint.
