The ABS DWV P-Trap features a union joint and hub x hub connection. The P-Trap provides a water seal so that wastewater will automatically be trapped in the arc of the configuration, thereby preventing unwanted gases from entering the household environment. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) is resistant to a wide variety of materials ranging from sewage to commercial household chemical formulations and can be exposed to a wide temperature span. ABS is lightweight, safe to handle and easy to install. ABS DWV is joined by solvent cementing or threading and can easily be connected to steel, copper, or cast iron through the use of transition fittings. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco I006150 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 5895 ABS P-trap glue onto standard 1-1/2 inch schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe?
Yes. The 5895 is a hub x hub solvent weld trap sized for Schedule 40 ABS DWV pipe, so 1-1/2 inch pipe slips straight into the 1-1/2 inch version (MPN I005950) and gets cemented. Both ends are hubs, meaning pipe goes into the fitting on each side, not threads. Sizes run 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch.
2) What does the union joint on a Nibco 5895 P-trap actually do for me on a service call?
The union joint lets you break the trap apart without cutting pipe. Both connections are solvent welded hubs, so once the trap is cemented in it is permanent at those joints, but the union in the middle of the trap body separates so you can clear a stoppage, pull a dropped ring out of the bend, or swap the trap without sawing into the arm or the tailpiece drop. On a repair-heavy building that is the difference between a five minute job and a re-pipe.
3) Can I use an ABS P-trap on a commercial building drain, or is it residential only?
Both. The 5895 is rated by Nibco for commercial and residential plumbing, on DWV drain, waste and vent service. It carries CSA B181.1, ASTM D2665, ASTM D3965, ASTM D2661 and D3311, is UL Listed 94V-0, meets NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and is NSF U.P. Certified. If your jurisdiction or spec calls out those standards for plastic DWV, the trap answers them.
4) How hot can wastewater get before an ABS DWV trap is the wrong choice?
Service range on this ABS trap is -40 F to 180 F. That covers dishwasher and laundry discharge and normal kitchen waste. Steam condensate, commercial dishmachine final rinse lines, or anything that can push past 180 F needs a different material. One hard limit worth knowing: never test or use ABS DWV with compressed air or other gases, water test only.
5) Can I connect an ABS trap to existing cast iron or copper drain lines?
Yes, but not directly. ABS DWV joins by solvent cementing or threading; to tie into steel, copper or cast iron you use transition fittings. The trap itself gives you two solvent weld hubs, so plan the transition out on the pipe run and bring ABS into the trap.
6) Should I use a hub x hub solvent weld P-trap or a slip joint trap under a lavatory?
Depends on who owns the fixture. A solvent weld hub x hub trap like the 5895 is a permanent, glued connection, which is what you want where the trap is in a wall, above a ceiling, in a chase, or anywhere a slip nut could weep unnoticed or be tampered with. A slip joint trap is the right call under an exposed sink where you want it serviceable by hand with no cement. The union joint on this one buys back some of that serviceability without giving up the glued connections.
7) Will a black ABS trap match the drain piping already in my building?
The 5895 is black ABS, so it matches existing black ABS DWV piping visually and in material. If your building is piped in white PVC DWV, that is a different plastic; ABS and PVC are not the same cement and mixing systems is a code question in most jurisdictions. Match the trap to the pipe you are cutting into.
8) Do I need anything besides the trap itself to install it?
The 5895 arrives as the trap with its union joint and nothing else. You supply the ABS solvent cement (and primer or cleaner per your local code), the pipe or tailpiece going into each hub, and any transition fitting if you are tying into metallic pipe. There are no slip washers or nuts to buy because the connections are cemented, not compression.
9) Does an ABS P-trap hold up to drain cleaners and commercial janitorial chemicals?
ABS resists a wide range of materials from sewage through commercial and household chemical formulations, which is why it gets specified in janitor closets, multi-family and light commercial waste lines. It is also light enough to hang and cut on a ladder without a second set of hands.
